What you might notice

What causes it

  • A lambda sensor at the end of its life, which is the single most common stored code on a high-mileage petrol car
  • A misfire from worn spark plugs, a failing coil pack or an injector, which is usually what makes the lamp flash rather than glow
  • An exhaust gas recirculation valve stuck or clogged, and on a diesel a particulate filter that is no longer regenerating
  • Catalyst efficiency below threshold, which is the code owners least want to see
  • An air leak, a split intake hose, a failing mass airflow sensor, or a loose or perished fuel filler cap on cars that monitor evaporative emissions
  • A flat battery or a recent jump start leaving codes stored behind it

Advisory or failure?

An engine malfunction indicator lamp that is inoperative or indicating a malfunction is a major defect and a failure. Both halves of that matter. The tester switches on the ignition and watches for the lamp to light and then go out — on some cars it only goes out once the engine is running — so a lamp that never illuminates at all fails exactly as surely as one that stays on, and removing the bulb to hide a fault fails the car rather than saving it. The check applies where a lamp is required: petrol and hybrid vehicles with four or more wheels and no more than eight passenger seats first used on or after 1 July 2003; petrol vehicles with more than eight passenger seats, and gas or bi-fuel vehicles, first used on or after 1 July 2008; and diesels including hybrids first used on or after 1 July 2008. Kit cars, amateur-built vehicles and American pickups are not required to have one. The part that surprises people is that this was introduced on 20 May 2018 and is entirely independent of the gas or smoke test, so a car can come in comfortably inside every emissions limit, drive perfectly, and still fail because the lamp is on. On a vehicle older than those dates an illuminated lamp is not this defect — though whatever is causing it may well fail the emissions test anyway.

Can you fix it yourself?

The one genuinely useful thing you can do yourself is read the code, and it has never been cheaper: a basic Bluetooth OBD adapter and a phone app is £15 to £30 and will pull generic powertrain codes from any car new enough for this rule to apply. Treat that as a starting point rather than an answer, because a code names the circuit the engine management is unhappy about, not the part that has failed — a lambda heater circuit code means the signal from that sensor is wrong, which can as easily be a chafed wire or an exhaust leak as the sensor itself. Check the free things first, since they clear a real share of lamps: tighten the fuel filler cap properly, look along the intake ducting for a split or a disconnected hose, and make sure the battery is healthy. What not to do is clear the code and hope. On most cars the lamp is back within a few miles, and clearing it wipes the freeze-frame data — the snapshot of what the engine was doing when the fault was stored — which is exactly what a garage needs to diagnose it in one visit rather than three.

What it costs

A diagnostic session is £50 to £90 at an independent and is the necessary first spend, because everything after it depends on the code. Reading the code yourself first with a £15 to £30 adapter narrows things down and is worth doing before you book. From there the spread is genuinely wide, which is why the band is. A perished fuel filler cap or a split intake hose is £10 to £60. Spark plugs and a coil pack are £80 to £250 fitted. A lambda sensor is £30 to £120 for the part with half an hour to an hour of labour, so £120 to £250, and more where the old one has seized into the manifold and has to be cut out. An exhaust gas recirculation valve is £120 to £350 fitted. At the top sits a catalytic converter at £200 to £900. Resist any quote for a catalyst before the fuelling fault that killed it has been found, because the replacement will go the same way.

What happens if you ignore it

The lamp is the car reporting something it has found and cannot correct, and what sits behind it ranges from a £20 sensor to a £900 catalyst. What they have in common is that they get worse. A misfire — the flashing case — dumps unburnt fuel into the exhaust and can destroy a catalytic converter within a few miles, which is how a coil pack turns into a four-figure bill; the correct response to a flashing lamp is to stop driving and have it looked at. A lazy lambda sensor leaves the engine running rich, which costs fuel, dilutes the oil and shortens the life of the catalyst behind it. A car that has dropped into limp mode is a genuine hazard joining a motorway. And because the lamp itself is the failure, the car cannot legally be used once the certificate expires, however well it seems to drive.

Will my car fail its MOT with the engine management light on?
Yes. An engine malfunction indicator lamp inoperative or indicating a malfunction is a major defect and a failure. Why does the engine management light fail an MOT if the car drives fine?
Because since 20 May 2018 the lamp itself is the defect, quite separately from the emissions test. The tester is not judging how the car drives or what the gas analyser reads — the car has reported a fault it cannot correct, and that is treated as evidence in its own right. A vehicle can come in under every limit and still fail on the lamp alone.
What does a flashing engine management light mean?
A flashing lamp usually means an active misfire, which is a more urgent message than a steady one. Unburnt fuel is passing into the exhaust and can destroy the catalytic converter within a few miles, turning a coil pack or a set of plugs into a four-figure bill. Stop driving and have it looked at rather than continuing your journey.
Will taking the bulb out or clearing the code get the car through?
No. A lamp that does not illuminate at all when the ignition is switched on is a major defect in exactly the same way as one that stays lit, because the tester checks that it lights and then goes out. Clearing the code does not fix anything either — the lamp is usually back within a few miles, and clearing it destroys the freeze-frame data a garage needs.

A high rate here is a property of the fleet as much as the car: these models skew old, and almost everything fails more with age. It is a reason to check the item on a used example, not proof the model is badly built. Models with fewer than 2,000 tests are left out because a rate drawn from a few hundred cars moves too much to rank.
