Why it is amber
A system has reported a malfunction, or something needs attention. The car is usually still driveable, but the fault will not clear itself and several amber lamps are an automatic MOT failure.
What turns it on
The engine control unit runs continuous self-checks on fuelling, ignition, emissions and the sensors feeding them. When a reading stays outside its expected range for long enough to be certain, the unit stores a diagnostic trouble code and lights the lamp. A steady lamp means a fault is logged; a flashing lamp means a misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter within minutes.
What to do about it
- If the lamp is flashing rather than steady, ease off and stop as soon as it is safe. A flashing lamp is raw fuel reaching the catalytic converter, and a few miles of that can destroy one of the most expensive parts on the car.
- If it is steady, check the obvious first: a loose or missing fuel cap genuinely sets an evaporative-emissions code on many cars, and it costs nothing to rule out.
- Get the codes read. Most garages and all the parts chains will do this cheaply or free, and the code is the difference between replacing a sensor and replacing a catalytic converter.
- Do not clear the code and hope. Clearing it wipes the readiness monitors, and on many cars the MOT emissions check cannot be completed until they have reset, which needs a drive cycle of anything up to a hundred miles.
- Book the repair before the MOT, not after. This is a straight major defect, so the test will end in a failure certificate whatever else the car passes.
Can you keep driving?
Briefly, gently
A steady lamp with the car driving normally is not an emergency, and most people drive for weeks on one. That is still a gamble: the fault behind it is often getting worse, and the car cannot pass an MOT while the lamp is on. A flashing lamp is a different matter and means stopping.
What causes it
- A failed oxygen or lambda sensor, comfortably the most common single cause
- A misfire from worn spark plugs, failing coils or leads
- A catalytic converter no longer working efficiently enough
- An air leak after the mass airflow sensor, which makes the mixture read lean
- A sticking or clogged exhaust gas recirculation valve, especially on diesels
- A blocked or partially regenerated diesel particulate filter
- A loose, damaged or missing fuel filler cap setting an evaporative leak code
Does it fail an MOT?
Yes. A tester records it as a major defect, under the wording Engine MIL illuminated indicating a malfunction
in the MOT inspection manual (section 8.2.1.2 for petrol, 8.2.2.2 for diesel).
Petrol cars and hybrids first used on or after 1 July 2003, and diesels first used on or after 1 July 2008. Older cars are not failed on the lamp itself, though the fault behind it can still fail the emissions test.

A high rate is not proof a model is badly built. Fleet age, annual mileage and how a model is used all move these figures, and vans and commercial derivatives sit near the top of most emissions defects for that reason rather than through poor engineering.

- Will my car fail its MOT with the engine management light on?
- Yes. A flashing lamp is a serious misfire and you should stop as soon as it is safe, because unburnt fuel reaching the catalytic converter can wreck it within a few miles. Either way, get the codes read before deciding.
- Can I just clear the code to pass the MOT?
- It rarely works and often makes things worse. Clearing the code also resets the on-board readiness monitors, and a tester can see that they have not completed. On many cars the emissions check cannot be finished until the monitors have run, which takes a drive cycle of up to a hundred miles, so the car fails on an incomplete emissions test instead. Fix the fault.
- How much does it cost to fix an engine management light?
- There is no single answer, because the lamp is not the fault — it is the messenger. The same lamp covers a loose fuel cap, which costs nothing, and a failed catalytic converter, which is among the dearest jobs on an ordinary car. That is why reading the code first is the advice on every version of this page: the code tells you which end of that range you are at, and the diagnostic is cheap or free at most garages and parts chains, often waived if they do the repair.
- What is the difference between the engine light and the MIL?
- They are the same lamp. MIL stands for malfunction indicator lamp, which is the term DVSA and the ISO standard use. Drivers call it the engine management light, the EML or the check engine light, and manufacturers draw it either as an engine block outline or, on some older cars, as the words CHECK ENGINE.
