Quick answer
The engine is losing combustion events, and the control unit either counted them across several cylinders or could not pin them to one. That usually means something the whole engine shares — fuel, air, spark quality or valve timing — rather than one failed part.
How the car works this out
Nothing on the car measures combustion directly. The control unit watches the crankshaft position sensor and looks at how hard the crank accelerates in the fraction of a turn after each cylinder fires. A cylinder that burns properly gives the crankshaft a shove; one that does not leaves a measurable flat spot, and the camshaft signal tells the unit which cylinder should have fired at that moment. Count enough flat spots and a code is stored. Two thresholds are used: a high rate that would overheat and destroy the catalytic converter within minutes, which makes the lamp flash, and a lower rate that would put the car over its emissions limits across a longer window, which lights the lamp steady. P0300 is what you get when the misses are spread out or cannot be attributed, and it very often appears alongside individual cylinder codes rather than instead of them.
What you might notice
- A lumpy, uneven idle you can feel through the seat and the steering wheel
- Hesitation, stumbling or a flat spot when you accelerate, often worst pulling away
- The engine management lamp on steady, or flashing if the misfire is severe
- Noticeably less power and worse fuel consumption
- Popping or spitting from the exhaust, and sometimes a smell of unburnt petrol
- On some cars it is at its worst on a cold start and improves as the engine warms
What causes it
Most likely first. A code names the check that failed, not the part that failed it, so more than one of these can produce the same number.

How to check: Pull two or three and compare. Plugs wear evenly, so if one is worn out the rest will be too, and a full set is one of the cheaper jobs on the car. Check the service history for when they were last done, and remember the interval is by time as well as mileage.

What to do about it
- 1If the lamp is flashing rather than steady, ease off and stop as soon as it is safe. A flashing lamp is raw fuel arriving at the catalytic converter, and a few miles of that can melt one of the dearest parts on the car. Driving it home is how a set of spark plugs turns into a catalytic converter.
- 2Get the full code list read, not just the first one. P0300 alone means something different from P0300 with P0302 and P0305 beside it, and different again from P0300 stored with a lean code such as P0171.
- 3Ask for the per-cylinder misfire counts on live data. Every modern control unit keeps a running tally for each cylinder, and it will tell you in seconds whether the misses really are spread out or are concentrated on one or two.
- 4Deal with the service items first. Spark plugs, air filter and fuel filter are inexpensive, are usually overdue on a car carrying this code, and between them fix a large share of P0300s outright.
- 5Have the intake smoke-tested before anybody starts replacing sensors. It is quick, it is conclusive, and unmetered air is one of the two commonest causes on the list.
- 6Do not clear the code as a way of dealing with it. If the fault is still there it comes back within a few miles, and you will have wiped the freeze frame data that told the garage what the engine was doing at the moment it happened.
Can you keep driving?
Briefly, gently
With a steady lamp and an engine that still pulls more or less normally, a short careful trip to a garage is reasonable. Keep the revs and the throttle down, because a misfire gets worse the harder the engine is worked and every missed event is unburnt fuel going into the catalytic converter. A flashing lamp changes the answer to no: stop, and have it recovered rather than driven.
Will it fail an MOT?
This is a double failure waiting to happen. The lamp on its own is a major defect on petrol cars first used from 1 July 2003 and diesels from 1 July 2008, and that one defect records 371,859 failures in the DVSA data behind this site — the car fails on the lamp whatever it drives like. Separately, a misfire fails the emissions test in its own right, because the fuel that did not burn leaves as hydrocarbons and hydrocarbons are exactly what the fast idle test measures. Clearing the code before the test makes it worse rather than better: that also wipes the readiness monitors, the tester can see they have not completed, and on many cars the emissions check cannot be finished until they have run.

- What is the most common cause of a P0300 code?
- Worn spark plugs and unmetered air leaks account for most of them between them. Plugs wear evenly across a set, so when they go they take several cylinders with them at once, which is precisely the pattern P0300 describes. Air leaks after the mass airflow sensor lean the mixture on every cylinder and are typically worst at idle and better under load. Both are cheap to check and cheap to fix compared with everything further down the list.
- Why do I have P0300 but no individual cylinder code?
- Because the control unit counted the missed combustion events but could not attribute enough of them to any single cylinder to trip that cylinder's own threshold. It points at a shared cause rather than a failed component: fuel supply, an air leak, poor fuel, cam timing, or an exhaust gas recirculation valve stuck open. It can also happen when the misfire is very intermittent, spread thinly over all cylinders.
- Can bad roads cause a misfire code?
- They can, because a misfire is not detected by anything watching combustion. It is detected by measuring how much the crankshaft slows between firing events, and a rough surface shakes the whole driveline in a way that looks similar. Most cars guard against this by suppressing misfire counting when the ABS wheel speed sensors report a rough road, but a worn dual-mass flywheel produces the same crankshaft wobble on smooth tarmac and there is no filter for that. If a misfire code keeps returning with no other symptoms and the engine sounds rattly at idle, have the flywheel considered before more ignition parts are bought.
- Is a misfire expensive to fix?
- It spans the whole range, which is why reading the codes properly comes before spending anything. At the cheap end are spark plugs, an air filter, a split vacuum hose or a single ignition coil, all of which are ordinary servicing money. At the dear end are a failed catalytic converter that the misfire destroyed, a timing chain, or a cylinder head with a burnt valve. The gap between those is the reason not to let a misfire run.
