Quick answer
The airflow meter is producing a believable signal, but not the one the engine control unit expects for the revs and throttle opening it is seeing. Something is either fooling the sensor or letting air past it.
How the car works this out
The engine control unit holds a model of how much air the engine should be swallowing at any given speed and load, cross-checked against throttle angle, manifold pressure and the corrections the fuel trims are already making. P0101 is set when the measured figure and the modelled figure disagree by more than a set margin for long enough to be certain. Nothing is electrically wrong, which is why the code so often survives a new sensor: the fault is frequently somewhere else in the intake.

Most likely first. A code names the check that failed, not the part that failed it, so more than one of these can produce the same number.

What to do about it
- 1Look for the air leak first. P0101 is replaced-a-sensor-and-it-came-back more often than almost any other code, and the reason is nearly always unmetered air getting in downstream.
- 2Check the air filter and the airbox lid while you are there. A filter fitted the wrong way round or a lid with an unclipped corner produces exactly this code.
- 3Have the intake smoke tested if the visual check finds nothing. It is a cheap diagnostic and it turns guesswork into a repair.
- 4Clean the sensing element with proper airflow meter cleaner before condemning the sensor.
- 5Only then replace the meter, and use a reputable brand. Budget copies frequently read badly enough to set the same code again.
Can you keep driving?
Briefly, gently
The car remains driveable and most people cover weeks on this code without incident. What you are paying for it is fuel, and on a turbo diesel a persistent intake leak also means soot loading the particulate filter faster than it can burn it off, which turns a hose clip into a much larger bill.
Will it fail an MOT?
The engine management lamp on its own is a major defect and 371,859 failures were recorded against it, so the test ends in a failure certificate whatever else the car passes. P0101 is worse than most for the emissions check as well, because a mixture built on a wrong airflow figure is exactly what the CO, hydrocarbon and smoke opacity limits are there to catch. Fix the leak and the emissions result usually comes back on its own.

- An air leak downstream of the airflow meter, followed closely by a contaminated sensing element. Air that gets into the engine without passing the meter makes the measured figure fall short of what the engine is actually breathing, which is precisely the disagreement the code describes. On turbocharged cars the split concertina intake pipe and a loose intercooler hose clamp are the two usual suspects.
- Why does P0101 come back after fitting a new airflow sensor?
- Because the sensor was rarely the problem. P0101 is a plausibility code, not a circuit code: it fires when the reading disagrees with the engine model, and an intake leak, a blocked filter, a sticking EGR valve or a restricted exhaust all produce that disagreement with a perfectly healthy sensor. Have the intake smoke tested before buying another one.
