Quick answer

The signal from the mass airflow meter is below the range the engine control unit accepts as possible, so it is being ignored. The engine runs on a fallback figure and usually feels flat and thirsty.

How the car works this out

The airflow meter's output rises with the air passing it. The control unit knows the lowest signal the sensor should ever produce, even at idle with the engine barely turning, and P0102 is set when the output sits below that floor. A signal pinned at the bottom of its range normally means the sensor is not being powered, the signal wire is broken or earthed, or the element is so fouled that it cannot respond.

What to do about it

  1. 1Check the connector and the fuse before assuming the sensor. A low input code is an electrical complaint, and a plug knocked loose during other work under the bonnet is a common and free explanation.
  2. 2Inspect the whole intake path from the airbox to the throttle for a split, a crushed pipe or a filter that has collapsed.
  3. 3Compare live airflow data against the manufacturer's expected idle and full-throttle figures. That single check separates a wiring fault from a lazy sensor.
  4. 4Clean the element before replacing it, then fit a quality replacement if cleaning changes nothing.
  5. 5Get it fixed before the MOT, because the lamp alone ends the test in a failure.

Can you keep driving?

Briefly, gently

The engine will run on its substitute airflow figure, so short journeys are usually possible, but the running is poor and stalling at junctions is common enough to be a nuisance. On a turbo diesel expect limp mode, which caps you at a modest speed with no warning.

Will it fail an MOT?

This is a straight major defect on the lamp, one of 371,859 recorded failures against an illuminated engine malfunction indicator lamp. An airflow signal reading low makes the control unit deliver less fuel than the engine needs, so a petrol car can also fail the lambda and hydrocarbon checks. Because clearing the code resets the readiness monitors, booking the test immediately after the repair is a mistake: the emissions check often cannot complete until the monitors have run.

Common questions

What does mass airflow low input mean?
It means the sensor's output voltage or frequency is below the minimum the engine control unit believes is physically possible, so the reading is being discarded. On most cars that is an electrical fault — an open signal wire, a wire shorted to earth, or a missing supply — rather than a sensor that has simply drifted. A badly contaminated sensing element can also stop responding and produce the same result.
Can a P0102 code stop the car starting?
It rarely stops it outright, because the control unit substitutes an estimated airflow figure when the real one is unusable. What it commonly does is make the engine crank longer before it fires and stall shortly after starting from cold, because the fallback figure is a compromise rather than a measurement.
Will P0102 cause an MOT failure?
Yes. The engine management lamp it triggers is a major defect for petrol cars first used from 1 July 2003 and diesels from 1 July 2008, and 371,859 failures have been recorded against that defect. Under-reported airflow leans out the mixture, so the tailpipe readings can fail as well.
Is P0102 the same as a vacuum leak?
Not quite, though a large leak can cause it. P0102 describes a signal that is too low to be believed. A big leak upstream of the throttle lets the engine draw air around the meter, so the meter genuinely sees very little flow. Smaller leaks usually set P0101 or a lean fuelling code instead, because the signal stays inside its electrical range and only the plausibility check fails.
