Quick answer

The mass airflow meter is reporting more air than the engine could possibly be taking in, so the control unit has rejected the signal. The usual result is an over-rich mixture, poor economy and an engine light.

How the car works this out

The control unit knows the maximum airflow the engine can draw at full throttle and maximum revs. P0103 is set when the reported figure exceeds that ceiling, or sits high while the engine is idling and clearly not drawing much air at all. A signal pinned at the top of its range usually means the signal wire has picked up a supply voltage, the sensor's earth has gone open, or the sensor itself has failed to a high output.

What to do about it

  1. 1Look at the live airflow figure with the engine off. A high reading with nothing moving proves the fault without dismantling anything.
  2. 2Check the sensor's earth and supply before condemning it, because a corroded earth produces a high signal from a perfectly healthy meter.
  3. 3Inspect the connector for water and the loom for chafing where it runs near the bonnet slam panel or the battery tray.
  4. 4Confirm the part number if the sensor has been changed before. The same plug appears on meters calibrated for very different engines.
  5. 5Deal with it promptly on a petrol car. Running rich washes oil off the bores and dumps unburnt fuel into the catalytic converter, which is among the dearest things on the car to replace.

Can you keep driving?

Briefly, gently

The car will drive, but it is running rich while it does, and a rich mixture is actively damaging. Unburnt fuel overheats the catalytic converter and thins the oil in the sump. Keep the journeys short and get it seen to rather than tolerating it.

Will it fail an MOT?

Two ways this costs you the test. The lamp itself is a major defect with 371,859 recorded failures, and the rich mixture behind it attacks the emissions result directly: excess carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons at the tailpipe are what the petrol emissions check measures. If the rich running has already damaged the catalytic converter, the emissions failure will outlast the sensor repair.

Common questions

What causes a mass airflow high input code?
Most often a failed sensor stuck at a high output, or a poor earth on the sensor circuit, which raises the signal voltage without anything being wrong with the sensor itself. A signal wire chafed against a live feed will do it too. Fitting a meter intended for a different engine variant is a less obvious cause but a common one on cars that have been repaired before.
Is it safe to drive with P0103?
For short distances, yes, but it is not a code to live with. The control unit is being told there is more air than there is and adds fuel to match, so the engine runs rich. That overheats the catalytic converter, sooty-fouls the spark plugs and dilutes the engine oil with fuel. Get it diagnosed rather than driving on it for weeks.
Will P0103 fail the MOT emissions test?
It can, on top of the automatic failure for the lamp. The engine management lamp is a major defect with 371,859 recorded failures behind it. Separately, the rich mixture that P0103 produces raises carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon readings, which are measured directly during the petrol emissions check, and can push a car over the limits even after the sensor is replaced if the catalytic converter has been damaged.
How do I know if it is the sensor or the wiring?
Switch the ignition on without starting the engine and look at the live airflow value on a scan tool. It should read essentially zero. If it reads a substantial flow with the engine stationary, the sensor or its signal wire is at fault. Then measure the voltage drop on the sensor's earth wire with the engine running: more than a couple of tenths of a volt means the earth is the problem, not the meter.
