The oxygen sensor before the catalytic converter has stopped responding and is sitting at the lean end of its range. Either the mixture genuinely is lean, or the sensor has stopped telling the truth, and the control unit cannot tell which.
How the car works this out
On a healthy petrol engine the upstream oxygen sensor should be constantly active, because the control unit deliberately dithers the mixture slightly rich and slightly lean and expects the sensor to follow. A signal that stops moving is therefore suspicious on its own. To be certain, the control unit runs an intrusive test: it forces the mixture rich and watches for a response. P2195 is set when the sensor fails to react — the signal stays at the lean end regardless of what the fuelling does. Bank 1 sensor 1 means the sensor before the catalytic converter, on the bank containing cylinder 1.

What to do about it
- 1Look for the exhaust leak before replacing the sensor. An exhaust manifold or front pipe joint leaking just before the sensor makes a perfectly good sensor read lean permanently, and it is the classic reason a new sensor changes nothing.
- 2Have the fuel trims read. Strongly positive long-term trims mean the engine really is running lean and the sensor is telling the truth; trims near zero with a stuck sensor point at the sensor itself.
- 3Have the intake smoke tested for vacuum leaks at the same time.
- 4Use a manufacturer-quality sensor if one is needed. Cheap oxygen sensors are notorious for lazy responses that set the same code again within months.

The car will drive, but a genuinely lean mixture runs hot, and sustained lean running is hard on valves and can damage a catalytic converter. If the cause turns out to be the sensor rather than the mixture, the risk is lower. Either way it is a fault to fix within weeks rather than months, particularly if an MOT is due.
Will it fail an MOT?
This is one of the codes most likely to cost you the emissions test as well as the lamp. The lamp is a major defect with 371,859 recorded failures. Separately, petrol cars fitted with a catalytic converter have their lambda value measured at fast idle, and it must fall within a narrow window around one. A front oxygen sensor stuck lean is precisely the fault that pushes lambda outside that window, because the whole closed-loop fuelling system depends on that sensor's feedback. The oxygen sensor monitor is also one of the readiness monitors a tester can see, so clearing the code shortly before the test is likely to leave the emissions check unable to complete.

- Bank 1 is the side of the engine containing cylinder number 1, which on a four-cylinder engine is simply the whole engine. Sensor 1 is the one before the catalytic converter, closest to the engine, which is the sensor the control unit uses to set the fuelling. Sensor 2 sits after the converter and is used to check how well the converter is working. So bank 1 sensor 1 is the upstream, fuelling-control sensor — the important one for how the engine runs.
