Quick answer

The engine control unit has been adding extra fuel to hold the mixture correct and has reached the end of what it can add. Something is letting unmeasured air into the engine, or something is restricting the fuel, and a split intake hose or a dirty airflow sensor accounts for the majority of these.

How the car works this out

The control unit uses the oxygen sensor ahead of the catalytic converter to keep the mixture at the chemically correct ratio, and records the correction it has to make as fuel trim. Small adjustments are normal and constant. When the long-term trim has been forced to add roughly a quarter more fuel than the base calculation and the exhaust still reads lean, the control unit concludes it can no longer compensate and stores this code. It is describing a correction it has run out of room to make, not a single failed component.

Most likely first. A code names the check that failed, not the part that failed it, so more than one of these can produce the same number.

    How to check: Watch the fuel trims at idle and again at around 2,500 rpm. A leak matters most at idle, where manifold vacuum is high and airflow is low, so a trim that is large at idle and much smaller at speed points firmly at a leak. A smoke test through the intake finds it in minutes.

    How to check: Unplug the sensor with the engine running. Many cars will run noticeably better on the default map with it disconnected, which is a strong hint the sensor is lying.

    How to check: Check the manifold gasket, the flexi joint and the downpipe. This one is worth ruling out early because it produces the code with nothing wrong with the fuelling at all.

What to do about it

  1. 1Get the fuel trim figures read at idle and at a steady 2,500 rpm. That single comparison separates an air leak from a fuel supply problem and saves most of the guesswork.
  2. 2Inspect every rubber intake pipe and vacuum hose with the engine running. Cracks open up under vacuum and are often invisible with the engine off — squeeze each one and look for splits at the ends where they push on.
  3. 3Check the airflow sensor. Cleaning it with a proper sensor cleaner is cheap and sometimes all it needs; never touch the element itself.
  4. 4Do not clear the code and assume it is fixed. The trims need time to relearn, and a road test with live data confirms the correction has actually come back towards normal.
  5. 5If both P0171 and P0174 are stored, look for something common to both banks rather than anything bank-specific.

Can you keep driving?

Yes

Most cars with a mild lean condition drive perfectly well and people cover thousands of miles on one. It is still worth fixing promptly: a lean mixture burns hotter than intended, which over time is hard on valves and on the catalytic converter, and a severe lean condition that starts to misfire will damage the converter quickly. If the car is stalling or hesitating badly enough to be awkward in traffic, treat it as urgent.

Will it fail an MOT?

The lamp is the certain failure — a major defect on petrol cars first used on or after 1 July 2003. What makes this code different from most is that it also threatens the gas test directly, because the tester's analyser calculates lambda and requires it to sit between 0.97 and 1.03 at fast idle. Lambda is a direct measure of exactly what this code describes: a genuinely lean engine reads above that band and fails on gas as well as on the lamp. There is a further trap in the causes. If the lean reading comes from an exhaust leak rather than the fuelling, the control unit will have been adding fuel to a mixture that was already right, so the car turns up at the test running rich with high carbon monoxide, which is the opposite failure to the one the code name suggests.

Is it safe to drive with a P0171 code?
Usually yes for normal driving, but do not leave it indefinitely. A lean mixture burns hotter than the engine was designed for, which over a long period is hard on exhaust valves and on the catalytic converter. If the lean condition becomes severe enough to cause misfiring — noticeable jerking, or a flashing engine light — stop driving it, because raw fuel reaching the catalytic converter can destroy it within a few miles.
Why does my car use more fuel with a lean code?
Because the code describes what the exhaust sensor reads, not what the engine is being given. The control unit responds to a lean reading by injecting extra fuel to bring the mixture back, so the car ends up burning more than it should while the sensor still reports lean. The economy loss is the compensation, not the fault.
