Quick answer
The engine control unit has been cutting fuel back as far as it is allowed to and the exhaust still reads rich. Unburnt fuel is going out of the tailpipe, which wastes money, dilutes the engine oil and is the fastest way to ruin a catalytic converter, so this one is worth attending to sooner than most.
How the car works this out
The same fuel trim logic as the lean code, in reverse. The control unit trims fuelling to hold the correct ratio using the oxygen sensor ahead of the catalytic converter, and here it has had to subtract roughly a quarter of the fuel it would normally command and the exhaust is still reading rich. At that point it has exhausted its authority to correct and stores the code.
What you might notice
- A smell of petrol from the exhaust, strongest at idle and after a cold start
- Black or sooty smoke from the tailpipe, particularly on acceleration
- Fuel consumption noticeably worse than usual
- Rough idle, and hot starting that needs more cranking than it should
- Sooty black deposits on the spark plugs when they are pulled
- Over time, a catalytic converter code appearing as well
What causes it
Most likely first. A code names the check that failed, not the part that failed it, so more than one of these can produce the same number.

How to check: Pull the plugs and look at them. One plug noticeably wetter and sootier than the rest points at that cylinder's injector. A pressure test that shows the rail bleeding down quickly after switch-off supports it.

What to do about it
- 1Deal with this one sooner rather than later. Running rich washes the oil film off the cylinder bores and dilutes the sump oil with petrol, and it overheats the catalytic converter, so the delay is what turns a cheap fault into an expensive one.
- 2Check fuel pressure early. It is quick, it is cheap, and it separates the fuel supply causes from the sensor causes in one measurement.
- 3Pull the spark plugs and read them. Uniformly sooty plugs mean a whole-engine cause such as pressure or a sensor; one wet plug means one injector.
- 4Look at what the control unit thinks the engine temperature is once it is fully warm. A lying coolant sensor is one of the cheapest causes on the list and a very common one on older cars.
- 5Change the engine oil after the repair if the car has been running rich for a while. Fuel-diluted oil does not protect the engine, and the smell on the dipstick will tell you.
Can you keep driving?
Briefly, gently
The car will usually still drive, but this is the code where continuing costs you real money. Excess fuel strips lubrication from the bores, contaminates the oil, and overheats the catalytic converter until it fails as well. Keep journeys short and light-footed until it is fixed, and if the engine is misfiring or the lamp starts flashing, stop.
Will it fail an MOT?
This is the emissions code most likely to fail the gas test outright, independently of the lamp. Excess fuel comes out as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, which is exactly what the analyser probe in the tailpipe measures at both natural idle and fast idle, and the calculated lambda value will sit below the required 0.97 to 1.03 window. That matters especially for older petrol cars first used before 1 July 2003, which are not failed on the lamp itself but are still gas-tested — a rich-running car of that age fails on the readings alone. On anything newer the lamp fails it first. There is also a secondary consequence worth knowing: if rich running has already damaged the catalytic converter, fixing the fuelling will not necessarily bring the gas readings back inside the limits, so leave time before the test rather than booking it for the same week.

- Very likely. The misled side means a coolant temperature sensor reading cold so the warm-up enrichment never ends, an airflow sensor over-reporting, or an oxygen sensor reporting lean when the mixture is correct. Fuel pressure and the reported coolant temperature are the two quickest checks and between them they resolve a large share of cases.
- Does running rich damage the catalytic converter?
- Yes, and quickly if the condition is severe. The converter works by burning off residual hydrocarbons, so a persistently rich mixture makes it run far hotter than it was designed for, which can melt or crack the ceramic substrate. This is why a rich-running fault so often ends up with a catalyst efficiency code stored alongside it, and why fixing the fuelling first is essential before any converter is replaced.
