Petrol vapour from the tank is stored in a charcoal canister and drawn into the engine to be burnt, and the control unit cannot verify that this is happening properly. The purge valve is the usual culprit, and whether it has stuck open or stuck shut makes a large difference to how the car behaves.
How the car works this out
The evaporative system collects petrol vapour from the tank in a charcoal canister and periodically purges it into the inlet manifold under specific conditions, metered by an electrically operated purge valve. The control unit verifies the purge by looking for its consequences — a shift in fuel trim as the extra vapour arrives, or a change in system pressure. If commanding the valve open produces no such change, or if the effects of purging appear when the valve should be shut, incorrect flow is recorded.

What to do about it
- 1Establish which way the valve has failed, because the repair priority differs. Stuck shut is a nuisance; stuck open is feeding raw fuel vapour into a running engine and upsetting the mixture.
- 2Stop filling the tank past the pump's first cut-off. Topping up beyond it pushes liquid petrol into a canister designed only for vapour, and a saturated canister is a replacement rather than a repair.
- 3Have the purge valve tested rather than replaced blind, though it is one of the cheaper components in the system and often the answer.
- 4Check the hoses along the whole run. They spend their life between a hot engine and the underside of the car and perish at both ends.

Can you keep driving?
Yes
The car is safe to drive. If the valve has stuck open you may find it stalls immediately after refuelling or idles poorly for the first few minutes of a journey, which is inconvenient rather than dangerous, and the accompanying rich mixture is not doing the catalytic converter any favours over time. A strong smell of petrol is the one symptom that should change your mind, because that suggests liquid fuel rather than vapour and warrants a look underneath.
Will it fail an MOT?
The MOT does not test evaporative emissions at all. There is no measurement anywhere in the test for vapour escaping from the fuel system, so on the face of it this code has nothing to do with the MOT — and yet it fails cars constantly, purely because the lamp it lights is a major defect. There are two indirect routes as well. A purge valve stuck open feeds extra fuel vapour into the inlet at idle, which can lift the carbon monoxide reading at natural idle enough to fail the gas test on a marginal car. And the tester does inspect the fuel system: a leaking fuel system or a missing or insecure filler cap is a defect that gets recorded on sight, quite independently of anything the control unit has stored.

- Why does my car stall after filling up with petrol?
- A purge valve stuck open is the usual explanation. Filling the tank pushes a large volume of vapour into the charcoal canister, and if the purge valve is not sealing, that vapour is drawn straight into the inlet manifold as an uncontrolled dose of extra fuel. The mixture goes far too rich at idle and the engine either runs very roughly or cuts out. It typically clears after a few minutes of driving as the vapour is used up, and returns at the next fill-up.
- Will P0441 fail an MOT?
- Yes, through the lamp. The MOT contains no test of evaporative emissions whatsoever, so the fault itself is invisible to the test procedure, but an illuminated engine management lamp is a major defect on petrol cars first used on or after 1 July 2003 and the car fails on that alone. A purge valve stuck open can additionally lift the carbon monoxide reading at idle, and the tester separately checks the fuel cap and looks for fuel leaks.
- Can overfilling the fuel tank cause EVAP faults?
- Yes, and it is a genuinely common cause. The charcoal canister is designed to absorb vapour, not liquid. Continuing to squeeze fuel in after the pump's first cut-off can push liquid petrol into the canister, where it saturates the charcoal and stops it working. A saturated canister cannot be dried out and needs replacing, so the habit of rounding the fill up to the next pound is an expensive one on cars with this design.
- Is a stuck purge valve expensive to fix?
- It is one of the cheaper repairs in the emissions family. The purge valve is a small solenoid, usually accessible in the engine bay, and replacing it is quick on most cars. What can push the job up is if the charcoal canister has also become saturated, since that lives under the car and is a larger part, or if perished hoses along the run need replacing at the same time. Having the valve tested before replacing anything avoids doing all three unnecessarily.
