Why it is amber
A system has reported a malfunction, or something needs attention. The car is usually still driveable, but the fault will not clear itself and several amber lamps are an automatic MOT failure.
What turns it on
The drive system reduces output whenever the battery cannot safely supply full current, or when a component has reported a fault it can work around rather than shut down for. That covers a nearly empty battery, a battery too cold or too hot to deliver full power, an overheating inverter or motor, and genuine drive system faults. On some cars, notably the Nissan Leaf, the tortoise specifically marks the last stage before the car stops altogether.
What to do about it
- Get off fast roads at the first safe opportunity. A car limited to a fraction of its power on a national speed limit road is a hazard to itself, and the limit can tighten further without warning.
- Check the state of charge first, because low charge is the commonest cause by a distance. If the battery is nearly empty, the tortoise is the final warning and you want the nearest working charger rather than the nearest garage.
- Check the outside temperature and how the car has been used. A battery soaked in frost overnight, or one that has just done several rapid charges and a hard run, will limit power until it comes back into range, and that resolves itself.
- If the battery is warm and reasonably charged and the tortoise is still lit, stop using the car for anything that matters and get the codes read from the hybrid and battery modules.
- Do not try to drive through it by pressing harder. The limit is imposed by the controller and the accelerator has no authority over it.
Can you keep driving?
Briefly, gently
Far enough to get somewhere sensible, and no further. If the cause is a nearly empty battery you have a short distance at reduced speed to reach a charger, and it will get slower. If the cause is heat or cold, normal power usually returns once the pack is back in range. If it is a fault, the car is not dangerous but it is unpredictable, and being unable to accelerate onto a roundabout or out of a slip road is a real risk rather than an inconvenience.
What causes it
- A nearly flat traction battery, which is the single most common reason and often the last warning before the car stops
- A battery too cold to deliver full current, typical on a frosty morning and normally clearing as the pack warms
- A battery or inverter running too hot, usually after repeated rapid charging or sustained hard driving
- A weak 12-volt battery unsettling the control units
- A drive motor, inverter or motor position sensor fault the controller can derate around rather than shut down for
- Traction battery degradation or a cell imbalance on an older car, where the pack can no longer supply peak current
- On hybrids, a petrol engine fault that leaves the car unable to combine both power sources
Does it fail an MOT?
Not on its own — but what causes it often does.
The tortoise itself is not a listed defect and the MOT does not measure power output or road test the car. Two indirect routes to a failure exist. On a hybrid, whatever is limiting power has often lit the engine malfunction indicator lamp as well, and that is a major defect on cars first used on or after 1 July 2003. And on any car, a vehicle too limited to be driven onto the brake rollers and run up to the required speed cannot complete the test, which the station will record rather than pass.

- What does the turtle light mean on an electric car?
- It means the car has limited the power available to the motor, so it will feel slow and may not hold motorway speed. It is a protective measure rather than a breakdown. The usual causes are a nearly flat battery, a battery too cold or too hot to deliver full current, or a drive system fault the car can work around. On a Nissan Leaf in particular, the tortoise is the stage immediately before the car stops, so treat it as the last warning rather than a suggestion.
- How far can you drive with the turtle light on?
- Assume a short distance at low speed and plan accordingly. - Lithium cells cannot move current as freely when they are cold, so the battery management system limits both how much power the car can draw and how much regeneration it will accept until the pack warms up. On a hard frost you may see reduced acceleration, weak or absent regenerative braking and, in extreme cases, the tortoise symbol. It is normal behaviour rather than a fault, and it clears within a few miles. Preconditioning the car while it is still plugged in warms the pack before you set off and avoids most of it.
- How do I get rid of the turtle light?
- You cannot clear it directly, because it is a consequence rather than a setting. Charge the battery if it is low, let the car warm up or cool down if temperature is the cause, and it will go out on its own. If the state of charge is healthy, the pack is at a normal temperature and the tortoise is still there, the car has a stored fault and needs a diagnostic that can read the hybrid, inverter and battery modules — a basic engine code reader will show nothing.
