Why it is amber
A system has reported a malfunction, or something needs attention. The car is usually still driveable, but the fault will not clear itself and several amber lamps are an automatic MOT failure.
What turns it on
The battery management system tracks state of charge continuously and lights the lamp when it falls below a set percentage, typically somewhere between five and fifteen depending on the car. Below that point most EVs progressively cut power, turn down the heating and eventually restrict the car to a crawl before shutting the drive system down entirely.
What to do about it
- Work out where you are actually going to charge before you do anything else, and pick a charger you can reach with a margin rather than the nearest one on the map. Chargers are occupied, broken or behind a barrier often enough that the nearest one is a poor plan on its own.
- Slow down. Air resistance dominates energy use above about 50mph, so dropping from motorway speed to a steady 55 or 60 in the inside lane buys back more range than anything else you can do.
- Turn the cabin heating down and use the heated seats and steering wheel instead. Resistive cabin heating is one of the largest single loads on an EV in winter; seat heating is a fraction of it.
- Switch to Eco mode if the car has one, and use maximum regeneration on the approach to junctions and downhill sections.
- Do not trust the remaining range figure to the last mile. It is a rolling estimate based on recent driving, and it will drop faster than the miles you cover if the weather turns or you rejoin a fast road.
- If you do stop, call for recovery rather than trying to push or tow it. Most electric cars must be moved on a flatbed or with the driven wheels lifted.
Can you keep driving?

Yes, but with a plan rather than optimism. There is genuine reserve below the warning on most cars, and driving gently at a lower speed with the heating turned down will stretch it further than the display suggests. What you should not do is treat it like a petrol fuel light and press on for another junction in the hope of something turning up, because running an EV to zero means a recovery truck rather than a jerry can.
What causes it
- Ordinary use — the same reason a fuel light comes on
- Cold weather, which both reduces the usable capacity of the cells and adds a large heating load, and can cut real-world range substantially
- Sustained high speed, which uses energy far faster than town driving and is the opposite of how a petrol car behaves
- Battery degradation over years and miles, so an older car reaches the warning sooner than it used to
- Preconditioning, heating or cooling the car repeatedly while parked and unplugged
- A battery management system misreading state of charge, which is rare but shows up as a warning that appears far earlier than the mileage justifies
Does it fail an MOT?
No.
Nothing in the MOT tests the traction battery, its charge, or its state of health. There is no equivalent of the emissions test for battery condition, which is why a used EV inspection and an MOT certificate tell you completely different things. One practical point does apply: the car needs enough charge to be driven onto the brake rollers, run through the test and driven off again, and a test station can decline to test a vehicle it cannot safely operate.

Common questions
- How far can you drive after the EV low battery warning comes on?
- There is no fixed figure, and that is the honest answer rather than a dodge. Most electric cars light the warning somewhere between five and fifteen per cent, which on a typical car is roughly a town-sized distance rather than a motorway-sized one. How far you actually get depends heavily on speed, temperature and terrain: the same reserve that takes you a good distance on a mild day at 40mph may take you a fraction of that at 70mph in freezing rain with the heating on. Plan for the lower end.
- What happens if an electric car runs out of charge?
- It does not stop dead. The car warns you, then reduces power, usually shows a turtle or tortoise symbol, and finally limits you to walking pace before the drive system shuts down. Once it stops you cannot walk to a charger and bring back a can, so it means recovery. Most electric cars must not be flat-towed either, because turning the driven wheels spins the motor and generates current, so recovery is normally on a flatbed or with the driven axle lifted. Some breakdown services carry a mobile charger that will add enough to reach a charge point.
- Does cold weather reduce electric car range?
- Yes, significantly, and it catches out most people in their first winter. Two things happen at once: lithium cells give up less of their capacity when cold, and heating the cabin draws real power from the same battery rather than coming free from waste engine heat. A drop of a fifth to a third in real-world range on a cold day is normal, more if the car is parked outside and the journeys are short. Preconditioning while still plugged in, and using the heated seats rather than the cabin heater, recovers a good part of it.
- Is it bad to run an electric car down to zero?
- Occasionally, no lasting harm is done, and the car protects itself by shutting down with a small buffer still in the pack. Doing it regularly is a different matter — sitting at very low charge, especially in the cold or for long periods, is one of the conditions that ages lithium cells fastest. The usual guidance from manufacturers is to keep the car between about twenty and eighty per cent for daily use and only charge to full when you need the range.
