Why it is amber

A system has reported a malfunction, or something needs attention. The car is usually still driveable, but the fault will not clear itself and several amber lamps are an automatic MOT failure.

What turns it on

A float and sender unit in the tank reports level to the gauge, and the lamp comes on at a set point, typically leaving somewhere around a tenth of the tank's capacity. Because the float measures depth rather than volume, the reading moves about on hills and under braking, which is why the last part of a gauge always seems to fall faster than the first.

What to do about it

  1. Fill up at the next reasonable opportunity rather than the next possible one, but do not gamble on a station you have not confirmed is there and open.
  2. Drive gently. Reserve is measured in fuel, not miles, and a steady 55 will make far more of it than a heavy right foot.
  3. Look at the fuel pump symbol on the gauge itself. The small triangular arrow beside it points to the side of the car the filler cap is on, which is the single most useful piece of dashboard trivia there is in a hire car.
  4. On a diesel, treat running dry as something to avoid entirely rather than a minor inconvenience. Diesel lubricates and cools the high-pressure pump, and running the system empty can draw air in and, on some designs, damage the pump.
  5. Make a habit of filling up before the light rather than after it. Regularly running the tank down is hard on the in-tank fuel pump, which is cooled by the fuel surrounding it, and it draws whatever sediment and water has settled at the bottom of the tank into the filter.
  6. If the lamp is on with a full tank, or the gauge has stopped moving, suspect the sender rather than the fuel.

Can you keep driving?

Yes

Yes, and most cars keep a sensible reserve beyond the lamp. The judgement to make is about where you are rather than how much is left: reserve on a road with a filling station every few miles is fine, and the same reserve on a rural A road at night is not. Running out is not damaging in itself on a petrol car, though it is on a diesel, and either way it leaves you stopped somewhere you did not choose.

What causes it

  • The obvious one — the tank is nearly empty
  • A stuck or worn float sender, so the gauge reads low or stops moving altogether
  • A corroded connector or wiring fault at the tank sender unit
  • An instrument cluster fault, which is rarer but does happen on some models
  • A genuine fuel leak, which is uncommon but serious, and is worth ruling out immediately if you can smell fuel or the consumption has changed suddenly

Does it fail an MOT?

No.

There is no MOT check on fuel level and no defect for this lamp, but a practical point catches people out: a test station can refuse to test a vehicle that does not have enough fuel to run the engine through the emissions check, and turning up on the last of the reserve is a way of wasting an appointment. What the tester does examine is the fuel system itself — the filler cap must be present and seal properly, and the system must not leak — which has its own defect and is easy to fail on a cap left loose or a perished seal.

Common questions

How far can you drive with the fuel light on?
Most cars light it with roughly a tenth of the tank left, which on a typical family car means a range in the region of forty to sixty miles driven gently. That is an average and not a promise: the figure varies by model, and how you drive in that reserve changes it substantially. Steady speeds on a level road will get you a good deal further than motorway pace or town traffic. If you want the exact number for your car, the handbook usually gives the reserve capacity in litres.
Is it bad to run your car on low fuel all the time?
It is not good for it. On a petrol car the fuel pump sits inside the tank and is cooled and lubricated by the fuel around it, so habitually running the tank near empty makes it work hotter and shortens its life. You are also drawing from the very bottom of the tank, where any water and sediment collects, and sending that towards the filter. On a diesel the same applies with more force, because the high-pressure injection system depends on the fuel itself for lubrication.
What happens if you run out of diesel?
More than with petrol. Running a diesel dry draws air into the fuel system, and the high-pressure pump and injectors rely on diesel for lubrication and cooling, so running them without it can cause real damage on some designs. Many modern cars will self-prime after adding a reasonable quantity of fuel and cranking in stages, but others need bleeding at the filter or a diagnostic-tool priming routine, which means a call-out rather than a can. If you do run out, add a decent amount of fuel rather than a splash before trying to start it.
Which side is my fuel filler cap on?
Look at the fuel pump symbol on the dashboard gauge. On almost every car built in the last twenty years there is a small triangular arrow next to it, and the arrow points to the side of the car the filler is on. Some cars instead draw the pump's hose on the corresponding side. It is the fastest way to settle the question in an unfamiliar or hire car without getting out.
Does a car need fuel in it for an MOT?
Yes, enough to run the engine through the test. Test stations are entitled to refuse a vehicle that does not have sufficient fuel or oil to be tested safely and completely, because the emissions check requires the engine to be run and held at raised speed. Arriving with the fuel light on risks a wasted booking. The same applies to a car that is too low on oil to be run.
