Why it is amber

A system has reported a malfunction, or something needs attention. The car is usually still driveable, but the fault will not clear itself and several amber lamps are an automatic MOT failure.

What turns it on

AdBlue is a urea solution injected into the exhaust, where it converts nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water across the selective catalytic reduction catalyst. Because that is an emissions control the car is type-approved on, manufacturers are required to make it impossible to keep driving without it. A level sensor triggers the first warning with a good margin left — commonly around a thousand miles or more — and the messages escalate as the countdown shortens.

What to do about it

  1. Top it up. AdBlue is sold at filling stations, motor factors, supermarkets and online, in bottles with a screw-on nozzle or from a pump at truck-friendly stations, and it is one of the few fluids on a modern car a driver can genuinely add themselves.
  2. Add a proper quantity, not a splash. Many cars only re-read the level and clear the countdown once a minimum amount has gone in and the ignition has been cycled, so a couple of litres may register as no change at all.
  3. Check which filler you are pointing at. The AdBlue filler is often right beside the diesel one, usually with a blue cap, and putting AdBlue in the diesel tank or diesel in the AdBlue tank is a genuine and grimly expensive mistake. If you do it, do not start the engine.
  4. Use only fluid meeting the ISO 22241 standard, which anything sold as AdBlue will. Never substitute water, screenwash or anything else — the system is precise about concentration and contamination means draining the tank and often replacing the pump.
  5. Do not let it reach zero. Once the countdown expires the car will run until you switch it off and then refuse to start, and it will do that wherever you happen to have parked.
  6. If the warning stays on after a proper top-up, drive a few miles and cycle the ignition. If it persists, the level or quality sensor may have failed, and that needs a diagnostic rather than more fluid.

Can you keep driving?

Yes

Yes, and normally, for as long as the countdown allows. The car will not lose power or behave differently while there is fluid left. What makes this different from other amber lamps is that the deadline is absolute and legally mandated rather than advisory: at zero the engine will start no more, and no amount of nursing it changes that. Deal with it while it is still a shopping errand.

What causes it

  • Ordinary consumption — most cars use roughly a litre every several hundred miles, more with heavy motorway use
  • A failed level or quality sensor reporting empty when the tank is not
  • A failed AdBlue pump or dosing injector
  • Crystallised deposits blocking the injector or the lines, which is what AdBlue does when it dries out
  • Contamination from the wrong fluid being added
  • A failed NOx sensor, which leaves the system unable to confirm the treatment is working and often lights the engine management lamp alongside
  • Freezing in very cold weather, since AdBlue freezes at around minus eleven degrees — the car heats the tank, but a fault in that heater shows up as a warning in winter only

Does it fail an MOT?

Not on its own — but what causes it often does.

AdBlue level is not tested and there is no defect for this lamp. The connections are all downstream. A car that has reached zero and gone into a no-restart state, or into limp mode with the engine lamp lit, cannot complete the emissions test, and an illuminated engine malfunction indicator lamp is itself a major defect on diesels first used on or after 1 July 2008. A diesel whose selective catalytic reduction system is not dosing properly can also exceed the smoke limits. Tampering is the serious one: fitting an AdBlue emulator or removing the system defeats an emissions control the car was approved with, and testers are instructed to look for missing or interfered-with emissions equipment.

Common questions

What happens if you run out of AdBlue?
The car will keep running until you switch it off, and then it will not start again. That is not a fault, it is a legal requirement: AdBlue feeds an emissions control system the vehicle was type-approved with, so manufacturers must prevent it being driven without it. You will get plenty of notice — the first warning usually appears with around a thousand miles or more of range left, escalating as it counts down — but the lockout at zero is absolute, and the only fix once it happens is to add fluid, which may mean a call-out if you are not somewhere you can buy it.
Can I top up AdBlue myself?
Yes, and it is straightforward. Buy it at a filling station, supermarket or motor factor, either in a bottle with a screw-on nozzle or from a dedicated pump, and pour it into the filler with the blue cap — usually next to the diesel filler, occasionally in the boot or under the bonnet. Add a decent quantity rather than a token amount, because many cars only recalculate the countdown after a minimum has gone in and the ignition has been switched off and on. Be careful which filler you use: AdBlue in the diesel tank is a very expensive mistake, and if it happens, do not start the engine.
How much AdBlue does a car use?
As a rough guide, most cars get through around a litre every several hundred miles, which works out at roughly one to three per cent of the diesel consumed. Steady motorway driving uses proportionally more than town driving, because the engine is producing more nitrogen oxides to treat. Tank sizes vary widely, so some cars need topping up between services and others are designed to be filled at each service. If yours is emptying far faster than that, suspect a leak or a dosing fault rather than normal use.
Is it illegal to remove or bypass AdBlue?
Yes, in the sense that matters. Fitting an emulator or deleting the selective catalytic reduction system disables an emissions control the vehicle was type-approved with, which means it no longer meets the standard it was certified to and should not be used on the road. Since 2018 MOT testers have been specifically instructed to check for emissions control equipment that is missing or has been interfered with, and a car found that way fails. It also invalidates insurance on a modified-emissions basis and makes the car very hard to sell honestly.
