The rail pressure sensor is reporting more pressure than the engine control unit asked for, and the unit believes it. Something in the pressure control is stuck, and the system is operating outside its design limits.
How the car works this out
Rail pressure is regulated by a metering valve on the pump inlet, a pressure control valve on the rail, or both working together. The control unit commands a target and watches the sensor. P0088 is set when the measured pressure sits above the target by more than the regulation can pull back, which means the control loop has lost authority — a valve is stuck, its wiring has failed, or the return path is blocked. Unlike P0193, the reading here is credible, which is precisely what makes it worth taking seriously.

What to do about it
- 1Stop driving it. Excessive rail pressure stresses the pump, the rail, the pipes and the injectors, and a high-pressure diesel line failing is not a minor event.
- 2Have the regulator and metering valve tested electrically and their commanded duty compared against actual pressure. That comparison usually identifies the fault directly.
- 3Check the sensor's resting reading to rule out an over-reading sensor before anything mechanical is replaced.
- 4Ask for the fuel to be checked for metal debris. Contamination in the valve seat can be a symptom of pump wear rather than a fault in its own right.
- 5Never loosen high-pressure fuel unions on a live system. The pressures involved will inject diesel through skin, and that is a hospital matter rather than a workshop one.
Can you keep driving?
No
Do not. This is one of the few codes here with a physical risk attached rather than just a repair cost. A fuel system running above its regulated pressure is stressing components designed with a finite margin, and a high-pressure diesel leak in a hot engine bay is a serious hazard. Have it recovered.
Will it fail an MOT?
The engine management lamp is a major defect and one of 371,859 recorded failures, so the certificate is decided before the tester reaches the tailpipe. The emissions side is equally exposed: over-pressurised injection produces poor combustion and heavy smoke on a diesel, and the smoke opacity limits are measured during the test. A tester finding a fuel leak in the engine bay will also record that separately.

- It should be treated as the most cautious code in this group. A modern common-rail system runs at well over a thousand bar, and the pipes, rail and injectors are designed with a margin that over-pressure eats into. A high-pressure diesel leak onto a hot engine is a genuine fire and injury risk, and diesel at those pressures can penetrate skin. Have the car recovered rather than driven.
- What is the difference between P0088 and P0193?
- P0193 is an electrical complaint: the sensor's signal is above the range the control unit accepts, which usually means a wiring fault, an open earth or a failed sensor, and the actual pressure may be perfectly normal or even low. P0088 means the sensor is working and the pressure genuinely is above the commanded target, which points at a stuck metering or regulating valve, a blocked return, or debris in the valve seat.
- Will P0088 fail an MOT?

These valves work to fine tolerances in a very high pressure environment, and if debris has reached the seat, the more important question is where the debris came from — a high-pressure pump beginning to break up will contaminate the new valve just as quickly as the old one.
