Quick answer
The rail pressure sensor is reporting a pressure above anything the system could produce, so the control unit has rejected it. The engine typically will not start, or starts and cuts out as the unit tries to reduce a pressure that is already low.
How the car works this out
The signal voltage rises with pressure but stops short of the reference voltage even at maximum rail pressure, leaving headroom at the top. P0193 is set when the signal exceeds that ceiling, or reports high pressure with the engine stopped and the rail depressurised. Electrically that means the signal wire has found a supply voltage or the sensor's earth has gone open. The dangerous part is what the control unit does with it: believing pressure is excessive, it cuts pump delivery, so the real pressure collapses and the engine starves.

What to do about it
- 1Read the rail pressure with the engine off before doing anything else. It should be essentially zero, and a high figure at rest tells you immediately whether you are chasing a sensor, a wire or a real pressure problem.
- 2Check the earth path for the sensor. A lost earth causes this code with a perfectly good sensor and is easy to miss.
- 3Look at whether P0088 is also stored. Two codes agreeing that pressure is high is a different situation from one code contradicting everything else.
- 4Inspect the connector for corrosion, particularly on cars that have had coolant or fuel leaks in that area.
- 5Do not have the fuel system opened up until the electrical checks are complete. High-pressure fuel work is skilled and dear, and this code frequently ends at a wire.
Can you keep driving?
No
Generally the car decides for you by refusing to run. The reason is worth understanding: told the pressure is far too high, the control unit throttles the pump right back, so the actual pressure falls away and the engine starves. Where it does run, it will cut out unpredictably. Recover it.
Will it fail an MOT?
An illuminated engine management lamp is a major defect with 371,859 recorded failures behind it, and that is before considering whether the car can complete the test at all. The emissions check needs the engine to idle steadily and then be held at a fast idle; an engine that stalls or will not start cannot be tested, and an emissions test that cannot be completed is recorded as a major failure of its own.

- Why does a high fuel pressure reading make the engine cut out?
- Because the control unit acts on what it is told. Believing the rail is over-pressurised, it reduces the delivery from the high-pressure pump to bring the figure down. The reading does not fall, because it was never real, so the unit keeps cutting delivery until the actual pressure is too low to run the engine. The result is starvation caused by a false high reading, which is why the symptom looks like a fuel supply problem.

- P0193 means the sensor's electrical signal is above the range the control unit accepts, which points at wiring, an open earth or a failed sensor.
