Quick answer
The engine control unit cannot get a usable signal from the sensor that measures fuel pressure in the rail. On a common-rail diesel or a direct-injection petrol, that usually means the engine will not start or will stall almost immediately.
How the car works this out
On a modern high-pressure fuel system the control unit runs a closed loop: it commands a rail pressure, reads the sensor, and adjusts the pump or the regulator to match. That loop only works if the sensor can be trusted. P0190 is the general circuit code, set when the signal is absent, electrically impossible or so erratic that the unit cannot classify it as simply high or low. Because uncontrolled rail pressure is a safety matter on a system operating at well over a thousand bar, the response is usually to shut fuelling down rather than to guess.

What to do about it
- 1Do not keep cranking. Repeated long cranking on a car that will not start puts an unnecessary load on the starter and the battery and achieves nothing.
- 2Have the connector and the reference voltage checked before ordering a sensor. On some engines the sensor is not sold separately from the rail, which makes a wiring diagnosis worth doing properly.
- 3Ask whether the code is current or stored. A historic P0190 from a one-off connector glitch is a different conversation from one that returns every time the key is turned.
- 4Check whether P0087 or P0088 are stored alongside it. If they are, the pressure may genuinely be wrong as well as unmeasurable, and the pump and injectors need looking at too.
- 5Use a manufacturer-quality sensor. Fuel rail sensors are one of the areas where cheap copies fail early and take a second labour charge with them.
Can you keep driving?
No
In most cases the choice is made for you, because the car will not start or will not stay running. Where it does run, it does so with the control unit unable to verify the pressure in a system operating at extreme pressure, and it will drop into a severe limp mode without warning. Recover it rather than driving it.
Will it fail an MOT?
An illuminated engine management lamp is a major defect on diesels first used from 1 July 2008 and petrol cars from 1 July 2003, with 371,859 recorded failures. In practice a car with a live P0190 rarely reaches the test at all, and if it does, the emissions check needs the engine to hold a steady fast idle and then be revved cleanly. An engine that stalls or falls into limp mode cannot complete that, and an emissions test that cannot be completed is a major failure separate from the lamp.
