Quick answer

The signal from the rail pressure sensor has fallen below the minimum the engine control unit accepts, so the reading is being rejected as electrically impossible. On most high-pressure fuel systems the car will not start or will stall.

How the car works this out

The sensor is designed so that even at zero fuel pressure it produces a small positive voltage, typically around half a volt, sitting clear of the bottom of its range. That deliberate offset is what allows the control unit to tell an empty rail from a broken circuit. P0192 is set when the voltage drops beneath that offset — a short to earth, an open signal wire, or a missing reference supply. Without a credible pressure reading the unit cannot run its closed-loop pressure control and shuts fuelling down.

Most likely first. A code names the check that failed, not the part that failed it, so more than one of these can produce the same number.

What to do about it

  1. 1Check for other stored low input codes. If the fuel rail, manifold pressure and throttle sensors are all complaining at once, the shared reference supply is the fault and only one thing is actually broken.
  2. 2Inspect the connector for fuel contamination. Diesel creeping into a plug is a slow, quiet killer of these circuits.
  3. 3Unplug the sensor with the ignition on to separate a shorted wire from a failed sensor in one step.
  4. 4Do not crank repeatedly hoping it will catch. It will not, and you will be replacing a battery as well.
  5. 5Have the loom examined where it crosses the engine if the fault comes and goes with temperature or vibration.

Can you keep driving?

No

Usually you cannot, because the engine will not run. If it does run, it is in a severe limp mode with the control unit blind to the pressure in a system operating at extreme levels, and it can cut out without warning. Recovery is the sensible answer.

Will it fail an MOT?

The lamp alone is a major defect, one of 371,859 recorded failures against an illuminated engine malfunction indicator lamp. Beyond that, the emissions test requires the engine to run, hold a steady fast idle and be revved cleanly. A car that will not start, or that stalls partway through, cannot complete the emissions check, and an incomplete emissions test is a major failure in itself.

Why does a fuel rail pressure sensor not read zero volts at zero pressure?
Because it is built with a deliberate offset, usually around half a volt, so that an empty rail and a broken wire look different to the control unit. Zero pressure gives that small positive voltage; a shorted or open circuit gives something below it. P0192 is set when the signal falls beneath the offset, which is why it means an electrical fault rather than genuinely low fuel pressure. Genuinely low pressure sets P0087 instead.
Will P0192 stop my car starting?
Usually, yes. The control unit governs rail pressure in a closed loop and cannot do so safely without a trustworthy reading, so it withholds fuelling rather than run a system at over a thousand bar blind. The typical experience is an engine that cranks strongly and never fires, or one that fires briefly and stalls.

Yes. The engine management lamp is a major defect for diesels first used from 1 July 2008 and petrol cars from 1 July 2003, and 371,859 failures have been recorded against it. In practice the car usually will not run well enough to complete the emissions test either, and an emissions test that cannot be completed is itself a major failure.
Why do several sensors have low input codes at once?
Because most engines share one five-volt reference supply between several sensors. If any single sensor on that supply fails with an internal short, it drags the whole reference down and every sensor connected to it reports a low input at the same moment. That is why a car can show low input codes for the fuel rail, the manifold pressure and the throttle together while only one part is actually faulty. Unplugging sensors one at a time until the reference voltage returns identifies the culprit.
