Why it is amber

A system has reported a malfunction, or something needs attention. The car is usually still driveable, but the fault will not clear itself and several amber lamps are an automatic MOT failure.

What turns it on

Stability control compares where the steering wheel is pointing with what the car is actually doing, using the four wheel speed sensors, a steering angle sensor and a yaw rate sensor that measures rotation about the vertical axis. If any of those inputs disagrees, drops out or reads implausibly, the module cannot trust its picture of the car and disables itself rather than braking a wheel on bad data.

What to do about it

  1. Check first that you have not simply switched the system off. A lamp reading ESC OFF or ESP OFF, often with the word OFF beneath the symbol, means the driver turned it off and is a different lamp entirely — press the button again or look through the vehicle settings menu.
  2. Look at whether the ABS lamp came on at the same time. The two systems share their wheel speed sensors, and a joint appearance points squarely at one sensor.
  3. Drive with more margin, particularly in the wet or on cold, greasy roads. Nothing feels different until the moment the car starts to slide, which is exactly when the system would have intervened.
  4. Get the codes read rather than guessing. Stability control has more inputs than most systems, and the code will name the sensor.
  5. If the fault appeared after suspension, steering or tyre work, mention that at the garage. A steering angle sensor usually needs recalibrating after an alignment, and a mismatched or wrongly sized tyre can upset the wheel speed comparison on its own.
  6. Deal with it before the MOT — it is a major defect and 35,322 cars a year fail on exactly this.

Can you keep driving?

The car is not disabled and nothing feels different in normal driving, which is precisely the problem: the safety net is gone and you will not notice until you need it. Stability control earns its keep on a wet roundabout or a cold morning, not on a dry motorway. Drive to a garage, take corners with more room than usual, and treat it as a job for this week rather than next month — it will also fail the MOT.

What causes it

  • A failed wheel speed sensor or a corroded reluctor ring, shared with the ABS
  • A steering angle sensor out of calibration, common after alignment or steering work
  • A failed yaw rate or lateral acceleration sensor
  • A brake light switch fault, which several systems treat as an input they cannot do without
  • A tyre of the wrong size fitted to one corner, making that wheel's speed disagree with the rest
  • Low battery voltage, or a failing ABS pump the stability system relies on to apply the brakes

Does it fail an MOT?

Yes. A tester records it as a major defect, under the wording ESC MIL indicates a system malfunction in the MOT inspection manual (section 7.12).

All vehicles fitted with electronic stability control, other than Class 3 vehicles. Testers are told to fail only where they are certain the lamp indicates an ESC malfunction rather than the system simply having been switched off, and to check the handbook if the symbol is ambiguous.

It is not a technicality either. Across the DVSA test data behind this site, 35,322 MOTs were failed on it, spread across 192 different models.

A high rate is not proof a model is badly built. Fleet age, annual mileage and how a model is used all move these figures, and vans and commercial derivatives sit near the top of most emissions defects for that reason rather than through poor engineering.

Common questions

Does the ESP or ESC light fail an MOT?
Yes, if it is indicating a malfunction. 'ESC MIL indicates a system malfunction' is a major defect under section 7.12 of the inspection manual, and 35,322 MOT failures were recorded against it in the DVSA data behind this site. A lamp showing that stability control has simply been switched off is explicitly not a defect, and the manual tells testers to fail only when they are certain the lamp means a fault — checking the handbook if the symbol is unclear.
What is the difference between the stability control light flashing and staying on?
Flashing means the system is working. On most cars the same skidding-car symbol flashes briefly whenever stability or traction control intervenes, which is normal on a wet roundabout or a slippery pull-away and needs no action beyond easing off. A lamp that comes on and stays on is the fault version — the system has disabled itself and needs diagnosing. If it stays on permanently, it will also fail the MOT.
Is it safe to drive with the stability control light on?
The car handles exactly as it did before right up to the limit of grip, so ordinary driving is unaffected. What you lose is the intervention that catches a slide before you are aware of it, which matters most in the wet, on ice, and on a corner taken faster than intended. It is safe enough to drive to a garage with extra care, but it is not something to leave for months, and the car cannot pass an MOT with the lamp lit.
Why are my ESC and ABS lights on at the same time?
Because stability control is built on top of ABS. It uses the same four wheel speed sensors to work out what each wheel is doing, and the same pump and valve block to apply the brakes when it intervenes. A single failed wheel speed sensor therefore takes both systems down at once, which is why the lamps almost always appear together. That combination is two separate major defects at MOT time, but usually one repair.
Can a wrong tyre size cause the stability control light?
It can. The system compares the rotational speed of all four wheels, and a tyre of a different size, or one significantly more worn than the others, turns at a measurably different rate for the same road speed. If the difference is large enough the module reads it as a sensor fault. It is worth checking that all four tyres match in size and are close in tread depth before paying for a diagnosis.
