Why it is amber

A system has reported a malfunction, or something needs attention. The car is usually still driveable, but the fault will not clear itself and several amber lamps are an automatic MOT failure.

What turns it on

An electronic parking brake applies the rear brakes with small electric motors, either built into the rear callipers or pulling a conventional cable through a single actuator. The control module monitors motor current, position and supply voltage, and lights the amber lamp when a motor draws the wrong current, a position does not match the command, or the module loses communication.

What to do about it

  1. Find out whether the brake still holds before you need it to. Apply it on a slight incline with your foot ready on the footbrake and see whether the car stays put.
  2. If it will not release, do not force the issue with repeated attempts — that flattens the battery and can overheat the actuator motors. Many cars have an emergency release procedure in the handbook; some do not.
  3. If you have to leave the car parked and the brake is not holding reliably, leave it in gear or in P, turn the front wheels into the kerb, and chock a wheel if you have anything to hand.
  4. Have the codes read. These systems are module-controlled and the fault will name the actuator, the switch or the supply.
  5. Check the battery first if the car has been standing or the battery is old. An electronic parking brake draws a heavy current for a moment and browns out readily on a tired battery, throwing a fault that looks worse than it is.
  6. If the car is due its MOT, get this dealt with beforehand. It is a straight major defect.

Can you keep driving?

The service brake — the pedal — is a separate hydraulic system and is unaffected, so the car stops normally. The risk is at the other end of the journey: a parking brake that does not hold can let the car roll away, and one that will not release means you are not going anywhere at all. Drive it to a garage, and park in gear, on the flat, with the wheels turned to the kerb until it is fixed.

What causes it

  • A failed actuator motor in one of the rear callipers, usually after water gets into the motor housing
  • A seized calliper making the actuator work against resistance it cannot overcome
  • A low or failing battery, or poor supply voltage to the module
  • A failed parking brake switch on the centre console
  • Corroded wiring to a rear calliper, which lives in the worst place on the car for salt and spray
  • A control module fault, or a module that has lost its position calibration after brake work

Does it fail an MOT?

Yes. A tester records it as a major defect, under the wording Electronic parking brake MIL indicates a malfunction in the MOT inspection manual (section 1.1.6).

Does an electronic parking brake light fail an MOT?
Yes. 'Electronic parking brake MIL indicates a malfunction' is a major defect under section 1.1.6 of the inspection manual. It is one of the rarer failures in the DVSA data behind this site, with 290 recorded across 21 models, and that is a reflection of fleet age rather than reliability — electronic parking brakes only became common in the last fifteen years or so, so most cars fitted with one are still young. Note that the parking brake also has to reach its efficiency figure on the rollers, which is a separate and far more common failure.
Why won't my electronic handbrake release?
The usual causes are a flat or weak battery, a failed actuator motor on one of the rear callipers, or a control module that has lost its position calibration. Try the release with the engine running rather than just the ignition on, because the system needs voltage. Some manufacturers provide a manual release, often a bolt on the back of the calliper or a procedure in the handbook, but many do not, and forcing repeated attempts risks burning out the motor.
Can I change the brake pads myself on a car with an electronic parking brake?
Not with the usual method. The rear pistons are driven by a motor rather than pushed back by hand, so the calliper has to be put into a service or maintenance mode with a diagnostic tool before the piston will retract, and taken back out of it afterwards. Winding the piston back by force damages the actuator. A few cars have a manual retraction procedure, but on most this is the job that catches home mechanics out.
Is the electronic parking brake light the same as the handbrake light?
No, and the colour is how you tell. Most cars use a red P or a red circled exclamation mark to say the parking brake is applied, which is information rather than a warning. An amber or yellow version of the same symbol means the system has a fault. If the amber lamp is lit, the brake may still work — but you cannot assume it does until it has been checked.
