This is not a flat battery warning. It means the charging system has stopped charging, so the car is now running on whatever the battery holds and will keep going only until that runs out. Everything electrical — ignition, fuel pump, lights, dashboard — is drawing from a reserve that is not being replaced.

Why it is red

Reserved for hazards and for faults where continuing could injure somebody or destroy something expensive. Most red lamps mean stop, though a few mean the opposite, so read the lamp rather than the colour.

What turns it on

With the engine running, the alternator should be holding the electrical system somewhere around fourteen volts. The lamp lights when the car sees that voltage collapse back to battery level or below, which means the alternator has stopped producing, or its output is not reaching the battery. It is normal for the lamp to be on with the ignition switched on before starting, and to go out within a second of the engine catching.

What to do about it

  1. Do not switch the engine off, and do not stop anywhere you cannot be recovered from. Once it stops, a car with no charging system very often will not start again.
  2. Head straight for home or a garage, whichever is nearer, and abandon whatever journey you were on. Do not press on hoping to deal with it later.
  3. Switch off every electrical load you can spare: heated rear screen, heated seats, air conditioning, heated mirrors, seat and steering wheel heating, the stereo, and any phone charging. Each one buys you minutes.
  4. Do not switch off the headlights at night or the wipers in rain. Being visible and able to see comes before conserving charge, and if that means the car stops sooner, it means the car stops sooner.
  5. Watch the temperature gauge. On a great many engines the same auxiliary belt drives the water pump, so a snapped belt means the engine will overheat as well, and overheating is the more urgent of the two problems.
  6. Expect the car to feel wrong as voltage falls. Electric power steering goes heavy, the ABS and stability lamps appear as modules lose supply, the automatic gearbox may harden its shifts, and the dashboard may dim. That is the system browning out, not five new faults.
  7. If you are a long way from anywhere, call for recovery while the car is still running and still somewhere sensible. That decision gets much worse once you are stationary on a hard shoulder.

Can you keep driving?

Only as far as the nearest sensible place to stop, and you have less time than you would like — think in terms of the rest of a short local journey rather than the rest of the day, and considerably less at night with the lights and wipers on. Keep moving while the car is still running, because switching off is the point of no return. If the temperature gauge starts climbing as well, the belt has gone and that changes the answer to stopping immediately.

What causes it

  • A failed alternator — worn brushes, a failed voltage regulator or failed diodes — which is comfortably the most common cause
  • A slipping, glazed or snapped auxiliary belt, which is the cheap cause if caught before the belt goes and the serious one if it takes the water pump with it
  • A seized or collapsed belt tensioner or idler pulley, often audible as a rattle or squeal beforehand
  • A corroded, loose or broken main cable between alternator and battery, or a poor earth strap
  • A blown fusible link or main charging fuse
  • A battery so far gone that it will not accept charge, which can trigger the lamp even with a healthy alternator
  • A failed battery monitoring sensor on the negative terminal, which on smart-charging cars tells the alternator not to bother

Does it fail an MOT?

Not on its own — but what causes it often does.

There is no MOT defect for the charging system, no alternator test and no check on whether the battery holds charge. The tester does look at the battery, but only that it is secure and not leaking electrolyte. Where a failing charging system bites is everything downstream: the test covers every lamp, the indicators, the horn, the wipers and the washers, and all of them are marked down if they do not work properly on a car that is browning out. A vehicle that will not start cannot be tested at all, and it is common enough for a car to fail on a spread of dim or dead electrical items that all traced back to one alternator.

Common questions

What does the red battery light on my dashboard mean?
It means the charging system has stopped charging, not that the battery is flat. With the engine running, the alternator should be keeping the electrical system at around fourteen volts, and this lamp appears when it is not. From that moment the car is running entirely off the battery, and everything it does — running the ignition, the fuel pump, the lights — is spending a reserve that is not being topped up. It is the most misread symbol on any dashboard, because the picture of a battery makes people think the answer is a new battery.
How long can you drive with the battery light on?
Less time than most people assume, and it varies enormously. A healthy battery on a dry day with nothing switched on might give you the best part of an hour. The same car at night in rain, with headlights, wipers, heated rear screen and blower running, might give you fifteen minutes. Treat it as enough to get home or to a nearby garage and no more, switch off everything electrical you can spare, and do not stop the engine, because a car with no charging system usually will not start again.
Is the battery warning light the battery or the alternator?
Far more often the alternator or its drive belt. The lamp monitors charging voltage rather than the battery itself, so it lights when the alternator has failed, when the belt driving it has snapped or is slipping, or when the cable between the two has corroded through. A battery at the end of its life can also set it off by refusing to accept charge, but fitting a new battery to a car with a dead alternator simply gives you a second flat battery a few days later. Have the charging system tested before buying anything.
Will a new battery fix the battery warning light?
Usually not, and this is the mistake the lamp's symbol invites. If the alternator is not producing, a brand new battery will run the car for a while and then be flat too, and you will have replaced the wrong part. Any garage or parts shop can test charging voltage with the engine running in a couple of minutes, and that single test tells you whether you need a battery, an alternator, a belt or a cable. Do that first.
Why did my power steering go heavy when the battery light came on?
Because on most modern cars the power steering is electric, and it is one of the largest electrical loads in the vehicle. As battery voltage falls, the steering assistance is one of the first things the car sheds to protect the systems it needs to keep running. The same brown-out explains ABS and stability control lamps appearing, the dashboard dimming and the gearbox shifting harshly. They are symptoms of the one fault, not five new ones.
