Quick answer

Soot burns off during a regeneration; ash does not. This code means the filter stayed restricted even after the soot was successfully burned away, so what remains is incombustible residue. That distinction matters because it is the code that tells you regenerating the filter again will not help.

How the car works this out

The control unit maintains a running estimate of how loaded the filter is, from the differential pressure across it read against exhaust flow, and from a calculated soot model based on how the engine has been running. Normally a completed regeneration burns the soot away and the pressure drop returns close to its baseline. When a regeneration completes properly and the restriction remains, the control unit attributes the leftover to ash, which cannot be burned. Once that residual restriction passes its threshold, this code is stored.

What to do about it

  1. 1Understand that another regeneration will not fix it, whatever anybody offers. Ash does not burn, which is the entire point of this code, and repeated forced regenerations only put more diesel into the sump.
  2. 2Ask about professional off-car cleaning before agreeing to a replacement. Specialists can remove ash chemically or thermally, and on a filter that is otherwise sound it is a genuinely cheaper route than a new unit.
  3. 3Establish why the ash built up before fitting anything. An engine consuming oil, or a history of the wrong oil specification, will fill a new filter the same way and considerably faster than you would expect.
  4. 4Check the oil level and its smell. Repeated regeneration attempts dilute the sump oil with diesel, and an overfull, thinned oil level is an engine failure waiting to happen.
  5. 5Specify the correct low-ash oil at every service from now on, and make sure whoever services the car knows the car has a particulate filter.

Can you keep driving?

Briefly, gently

A heavily restricted filter puts back-pressure on the exhaust, which makes the turbocharger work harder and raises exhaust temperatures. Many cars also drop into a reduced-power mode. Add the risk of fuel-diluted oil from repeated regeneration attempts and this becomes a fault to deal with rather than manage. Short, gentle journeys to the garage are fine; carrying on for months is how a filter problem turns into an engine problem.

Will it fail an MOT?

This is the code that most often precedes somebody being offered the removal of the filter as a cheap way out, and it is worth being blunt about where that leads. A diesel with the particulate filter removed or cut open fails its MOT outright, every year, permanently, and the tester is specifically instructed to look for a cut and rewelded casing. There is no version of that decision that ends well at test time. The legitimate consequences of leaving the code are bad enough on their own: the lamp is a major defect on diesels first used on or after 1 July 2008, a filter no longer functioning properly lets visible smoke through, which is itself an automatic failure on a filter-equipped diesel, and a heavily restricted exhaust makes the metered acceleration smoke test harder to pass.

What is the difference between soot and ash in a DPF?
Soot is carbon from combustion and it burns. That is what a regeneration does: it raises the exhaust temperature enough to convert the trapped soot to gas, and the filter is clear again. Ash is incombustible residue, mostly from the metallic additives in engine oil, and no amount of heat will remove it. Ash therefore accumulates permanently over the filter's life, which is why every filter eventually fills regardless of how the car is driven, and why this particular code means regenerating again will achieve nothing.
Can a DPF full of ash be cleaned?
Often yes, and it is worth asking before agreeing to a replacement. Specialists remove the filter from the car and clean it chemically or thermally, which does remove ash in a way that on-car regeneration cannot. Whether it is worthwhile depends on the filter's condition — a substrate that is cracked or partly melted cannot be rescued — and on why the ash built up, because an engine consuming oil will reload a cleaned filter quickly.
Will P242F fail an MOT?
Yes. The illuminated engine management lamp is a major defect on diesels first used on or after 1 July 2008. A filter that is no longer working properly also risks the smoke checks: a diesel fitted with a particulate filter fails if the exhaust emits visible smoke of any colour, and the metered acceleration test measures smoke opacity against a limit. If anyone has removed the filter to deal with the problem, the car fails outright and does so at every test thereafter.
Does using the wrong engine oil damage the DPF?
Yes, and it is one of the most preventable causes of premature ash loading. Ash in a particulate filter comes largely from the metallic additive package in engine oil, so diesels fitted with a filter require a low-ash oil specification. Ordinary oil, or the wrong grade chosen on price, puts far more ash through the exhaust and shortens the filter's life considerably. Check the manufacturer's specification and make sure whoever services the car is using it, because the saving on a cheaper oil is trivial against the cost of a filter.
