The exact order varies, but the catalyst and any factory-fitted DPF must be present and untampered. The complete system must also be secure. A lambda sensor samples exhaust oxygen so the engine can control fuelling.

What you might notice

  • Nothing on the dashboard, and often noticeably better throttle response — which is exactly why it gets done
  • A tailpipe that sooty-marks a tissue, or visible smoke under acceleration on a car that should produce none

Advisory or failure?

The tester inspects the emission control equipment that is readily visible and identifiable, including the particulate filter, and looks for evidence that it has been removed or otherwise tampered with. Emission control equipment fitted by the manufacturer that is missing, obviously modified or obviously defective is a major defect. Evidence that the particulate filter has specifically been tampered with is a major defect in its own right. Where a canister has clearly been cut open and rewelded, the tester must reject it unless the person presenting the car can show evidence of a legitimate reason for the cut, such as professional off-car filter cleaning — so keep that invoice. There is a widely repeated claim that a tester must refuse to test a car with the filter removed, and it is worth being precise: the grading is a major defect and a failure, not a refusal. The refusal ground that does exist for diesels is a different one — a tester may decline to carry out the smoke test where the engine's condition or maintenance history is suspect, because the test itself could damage it. Separately, a car with a factory filter fails on any visible smoke of any colour, so a removed filter usually fails twice over.

Can you fix it yourself?

There is no home fix worth attempting and no shortcut. Refitting means sourcing a correct filter for the exact engine variant, welding or clamping it into the system, and then getting the engine management back to standard — a remap done at the same time as the removal will have had the differential pressure and temperature sensors disabled, and the car will not run or regenerate properly until that is undone. The sensors themselves are often missing or blanked and have to be replaced. If you are buying a used diesel, the checks are yours to make: look under the car for a canister that is the right size and shape for the model, look for weld marks or fresh paint, run a tissue over the tailpipe, and treat 'DPF delete' or 'decat' in the service history as a repair bill you will inherit.

What it costs

This is the most expensive item in this category and the range is wide. An aftermarket or pattern filter for a common engine is £250 to £700 in parts with two to four hours of labour, so £450 to £1,000 fitted. An original-equipment filter for a modern diesel can be £900 to £1,800 on its own, which is how the top of the band is reached and passed. Add the parts that were deleted with it — differential pressure sensor, temperature sensors, pipework — and a remap back to standard at £150 to £350. Before spending any of it, get the filter tested: if the original is still on the car and merely blocked, a forced regeneration is £80 to £150 and an off-car clean £150 to £400, both of which are a different order of money entirely.

What happens if you ignore it

The car cannot be legally used on the road once the certificate runs out, and it will not pass in this condition. Using a vehicle that has been modified so it no longer meets the emissions standard it was type-approved to is an offence under the construction and use regulations in its own right, whatever the MOT says. There is an insurance dimension too, since an undeclared modification of this kind gives an insurer a straightforward argument. And the practical cost only goes one way: a car that has run without a filter has been pumping raw soot through the rest of the exhaust and, in many cases, has an engine map that will need putting back to standard before a new filter survives.
