Quick answer

The turbocharger is delivering more boost pressure than the engine control unit asked for, and the unit has cut power to protect the engine. It is usually a boost control problem rather than a turbo that has gone wrong.

How the car works this out

The control unit commands a target boost pressure and measures the result with the manifold pressure or boost sensor. On a variable-geometry turbo it does this by moving the vanes; on a wastegated turbo, by bleeding pressure to the actuator. P0234 is set when measured boost exceeds the target by more than an allowed margin for more than a moment. Overboost is treated urgently because the engine's pistons, rods and head gasket are designed around a specific maximum cylinder pressure, so most cars respond by cutting fuel immediately, which is the sudden power loss drivers feel.

What to do about it

  1. 1Ease off when it happens. Continuing to demand full throttle on a car that is overboosting stresses exactly the parts you cannot afford to break.
  2. 2Check the boost control hoses before anything else. Split, softened or crossed hoses are common, cheap and quick.
  3. 3Have the variable vane mechanism inspected on a diesel. Carbon fouling is the usual reason vanes cannot open, and on some turbos it can be cleaned rather than replaced.
  4. 4Mention any remap to the garage. A tune that exceeds the standard boost limits sets this code by design, and diagnosing it as a fault wastes everyone's time.
  5. 5Deal with it before the fault becomes mechanical. Sustained overboost is one of the ways head gaskets fail.

The car will get you there and will usually behave itself at light throttle, but the sudden power cut is a hazard in its own right when it happens in the middle of an overtake. More importantly, every episode of overboost is loading the engine beyond its design pressure. Drive gently and get it seen to.

Will it fail an MOT?

The engine management lamp is a major defect with 371,859 recorded failures behind it, so the certificate is settled on the lamp alone. There is a specific complication for diesels: the smoke opacity test involves free accelerations to the governed speed, which is exactly the condition that provokes an overboost cut. A car that falls into limp mode during the test may be unable to complete the emissions check, and an incomplete emissions test is a separate major failure.

Why does my car lose power then come back after restarting?
That is the classic overboost pattern. When measured boost exceeds the target, the control unit cuts fuelling immediately to protect the engine and holds the car in a reduced-power limp mode. Switching the engine off and on again resets that protection, so the car feels normal until you next ask for full throttle and the same thing happens. It is a repeatable symptom rather than an intermittent one, which is helpful for diagnosis.

Sticking variable-geometry turbo vanes. The vanes swivel to control how hard the turbo works, and on an engine that does a lot of short, cold journeys they gum up with carbon and soot until they can no longer swing open to reduce boost. There is a practical problem too: the diesel smoke test involves revving the engine hard to the governed speed several times, which is precisely what triggers an overboost cut. If the car drops into limp mode the emissions test cannot be completed, and that is a further major failure.
Can overboost damage the engine?
It can, which is why the control unit reacts so abruptly. Pistons, connecting rods, head bolts and the head gasket are all specified for a maximum cylinder pressure, and boost above the design figure pushes past it. The protective power cut usually prevents damage, but repeated episodes — particularly on a remapped car where the limits have been raised — are a recognised route to a failed head gasket or worse.
