Why it is amber
A system has reported a malfunction, or something needs attention. The car is usually still driveable, but the fault will not clear itself and several amber lamps are an automatic MOT failure.
What turns it on
Adaptive suspension continuously varies damping using valves or magnetically controlled fluid inside each damper, driven by a module reading wheel accelerometers, ride height sensors, steering angle and speed. If a damper stops responding, a sensor drops out or a wiring connection breaks, the module can no longer control the ride, so it defaults to a safe fixed setting and warns you. On cars without adaptive dampers the same symbol is often used more loosely for a chassis system fault, so the handbook is worth a look before assuming it is the suspension itself.
What to do about it
- Notice how the car now rides. Stuck firm is the usual default and is uncomfortable but safe. A car that has gone floaty and wallowy, or that crashes over one particular wheel, is telling you which corner to look at.
- Look at the dampers. A damper coated in oil down one side has lost its seal, which will set the fault on an adaptive system and is a defect the MOT records in its own right.
- Check the wiring at each corner. Adaptive dampers have a plug and a short loom in the wheel arch, exposed to salt, grit and steering movement, and a broken wire there is a common and cheap fault to find.
- Have the codes read before replacing anything. Adaptive dampers are expensive parts and the codes will usually name a specific corner, which stops you buying a set when one connector was at fault.
- Get any knocking, clonking or uneven ride height investigated separately. Those are mechanical suspension problems, and they are what actually fails MOTs.
Can you keep driving?

Yes, in almost all cases. The system defaults to a fixed setting rather than switching off, so the car remains damped and controlled — it simply stops adapting. Drive it normally but not hard, and get it looked at, because a leaking damper behind the warning is a genuine safety item that also affects braking stability and tyre wear. If the car has become noticeably bouncy or unsettled over bumps, treat that as more urgent.
What causes it
- A failed adaptive damper, or one that has lost its seal and is leaking
- A broken or corroded wire in the loom to a damper, which is exposed at each wheel arch
- A failed ride height or wheel acceleration sensor, or a snapped plastic sensor linkage
- A control module fault or a lost communication link on the vehicle network
- Low battery voltage, which trips a surprising number of chassis modules into fault mode
- A previous repair where a conventional damper was fitted in place of an adaptive one, leaving the module with nothing to talk to
Does it fail an MOT?
Not on its own — but what causes it often does.
There is no MOT defect for an adaptive suspension warning lamp, and the test does not assess damping performance or road test the car. What is inspected, under section 5.3, is the physical condition of everything underneath, and it is a long list: a broken or seriously corroded coil spring, a corroded spring seat, corroded or fractured suspension mountings, damaged or distorted arms, worn bushes, worn anti-roll bar links and excessively worn ball joints are all recordable defects, most of them major. A shock absorber that is leaking or has failed is also a defect. So the lamp itself passes, and the reason it came on very often does not.

- What does the suspension warning light mean?
- On most cars it means the electronically controlled damping has detected a fault and has defaulted to a fixed setting, so the drive mode selector no longer changes how the car rides. The usual causes are a failed or leaking adaptive damper, a broken wire in the loom running to one of the wheel arches, or a failed ride height sensor. It does not mean a spring has broken or that the car is about to collapse — those produce a bang, a lean or a clonk rather than a warning lamp, because the springs and arms are not monitored electronically at all.
- Can I drive with the suspension warning light on?
- Generally yes. These systems are designed to fail into a safe fixed setting rather than switching off, so the car stays damped and controlled and usually just feels firmer than normal. What you should not do is ignore it indefinitely, because the fault behind it is often a damper that has lost its oil, and a car with a dead damper takes longer to stop, is less stable in a crosswind and scallops its tyres. If the car has become bouncy, wallowy or unsettled over bumps, get it looked at promptly rather than at your convenience.
- Does a suspension warning light fail an MOT?
- The lamp itself does not. There is no MOT defect for an adaptive suspension warning lamp, and the tester does not road test the car or measure how well the dampers work. The suspension is still examined closely though, under section 5.3: broken or corroded springs, corroded spring seats and mountings, damaged arms, worn bushes and ball joints, worn anti-roll bar links and leaking or failed shock absorbers are all recordable defects and most are major. So a car can pass with the lamp lit and fail on the leaking damper that caused it.
- Why has my car suddenly started riding harshly?
- If a warning lamp appeared at the same time, the adaptive damping has almost certainly defaulted to its firmest setting, which is what these systems do when they lose confidence in a damper or a sensor. Without a lamp, look at the simpler explanations first: over-inflated tyres, a different tyre or wheel size fitted at the last change, or a damper that has seized. A sudden change in ride quality is always worth investigating, because the components that control it are also the ones that keep the tyres in contact with the road under braking.
