Why it is amber
A system has reported a malfunction, or something needs attention. The car is usually still driveable, but the fault will not clear itself and several amber lamps are an automatic MOT failure.
What turns it on
The control unit compares what it commanded with what happened: input and output shaft speeds should give a known ratio in each gear, solenoids should respond within a set time, fluid pressure and temperature should stay in range. When the numbers do not agree, or a component does not answer, it stores a code and either blocks the affected gears or drops into a single fixed gear, commonly third, chosen so the car can still be driven somewhere.
What to do about it
- If the car has dropped into limp mode, get off fast roads. One fixed gear means poor acceleration and a car that cannot keep up with motorway traffic, which is a bigger risk than the fault itself.
- Pull over somewhere safe, switch the car fully off for a minute and restart. A transient sensor or voltage glitch will often clear; a real fault comes straight back, and knowing which you have is worth the two minutes.
- Look underneath for a leak. Automatic transmission fluid is usually red or, once it has aged, brown, and a gearbox low on fluid is one of the few causes a driver can spot without tools.
- Get the codes read with equipment that talks to the transmission control unit. A cheap reader only speaks to the engine and will show a single generic code, or nothing at all.
- Do not keep driving it for weeks in the hope it settles. Slipping generates heat, heat cooks the fluid, and cooked fluid destroys the clutch packs — which turns a solenoid or a fluid service into one of the dearest repairs on the car.

Usually far enough to reach help, and that is what limp mode exists for. The car will feel slow and will hold a high engine speed, which is uncomfortable but not damaging over a short distance. What does the damage is carrying on for weeks: a slipping transmission overheats its own fluid and wears the clutch packs, and the gap between an early fix and a rebuild is enormous.
What causes it
- Low, old or degraded transmission fluid, which is behind a large share of these and is also the cheapest to put right
- A failed shift solenoid or a worn valve body, so a commanded gear never properly engages
- A failed input or output shaft speed sensor, which leaves the controller unable to confirm which gear it is in
- Worn clutch packs or bands in a conventional automatic, giving slip under load before anything else shows
- A mechatronic unit fault on a dual-clutch gearbox, which combines the control unit and the hydraulics in one assembly
- A torque converter lock-up clutch shuddering or failing to engage, often felt as a vibration at a steady cruise
- Corroded connectors or a chafed loom at the gearbox, where the wiring lives in a hot, wet place
- Outdated control unit software, which on some models is a known fix rather than a fob-off
Does it fail an MOT?
Not on its own — but what causes it often does.
The MOT has nothing to say about the gearbox. There is no road test, no shift quality check and no fluid level check, so a car that slips badly can still pass. What a tester can record is a leak: since 2018 a fluid leak that could harm the environment or another road user is a defect, and gearbox oil on the road counts the same as engine oil. Separately, a car so restricted that it cannot be driven up to the required speed on the brake rollers cannot complete the test.

- For a short distance to a garage, usually yes. Most cars respond to a transmission fault by locking into one gear — limp mode — precisely so you can get off the road safely. Expect poor acceleration and high revs. What you should not do is keep driving it that way for weeks, because a slipping or overheating gearbox damages itself progressively and the repair gets dramatically more involved the longer it goes on.
- What is limp mode on an automatic gearbox?
- It is a protective state the transmission control unit selects when it no longer trusts what the gearbox is doing.
