Why it is amber
A system has reported a malfunction, or something needs attention. The car is usually still driveable, but the fault will not clear itself and several amber lamps are an automatic MOT failure.
What turns it on
A dual-clutch gearbox has no torque converter, so it pulls away by deliberately slipping a dry or wet clutch, exactly as a driver would. Slipping generates heat. Repeated low-speed manoeuvring, a queue on a gradient, or holding the car stationary on the throttle instead of the brake puts heat in faster than the clutch can shed it, and the control unit warns you before it starts reducing torque or refusing to engage a gear at all.
What to do about it
- Stop somewhere safe and let it cool. A few minutes stationary with the gearbox in Park or Neutral is usually enough, and it is far quicker than the alternative.
- Hold the car on the brake or the handbrake on a hill, never on the accelerator. This is the single biggest cause of the warning and the easiest habit to change: on a dual-clutch box, balancing the car on the throttle is riding the clutch, and it is doing the damage you would expect from that.
- Use the auto hold or hill-hold function if the car has one. It exists partly for this reason.
- Get out of tight repetitive manoeuvring. Shuffling in a multi-storey, reversing a trailer or a long series of three-point turns will bring the warning on in a car that is otherwise perfectly healthy.
- If it appears in ordinary driving with no crawling involved, or the car judders as it pulls away, stop treating it as a heat warning. That is clutch wear or an actuator fault and it needs a garage before it strands you.
- Have a specialist check the clutch adaptation values. On several dual-clutch designs these drift over time and a proper reset restores normal behaviour without any parts.

If the warning came on while crawling or manoeuvring, stop, let it cool for a few minutes and carry on normally — nothing is broken and the car has simply told you it needs a rest. Treat it differently if it appears at normal road speeds, if the car judders on pulling away, or if it is slow to engage a gear from rest. That is wear rather than heat, and a dual-clutch gearbox that has started slipping can go from a warning to a car that will not move in a short space of time.
What causes it
- Prolonged crawling in traffic or repeated low-speed manoeuvring, which is the everyday cause and not a fault at all
- Holding the car on a hill with the accelerator instead of the brake
- Towing or a heavy load, especially pulling away repeatedly on a gradient
- Worn clutch packs on a high-mileage dual-clutch gearbox, giving judder on pull-away before anything else
- A failing clutch actuator or mechatronic unit
- Degraded or incorrect gearbox fluid on a wet-clutch design, where the fluid also cools the clutches
- Clutch adaptation values drifting out of range, which mimics wear and is fixed with a diagnostic tool rather than parts
- On a manual, a worn clutch or a hydraulic release problem where the car has a sensor to report it
Does it fail an MOT?
No.
The MOT does not test the clutch in any way. There is no road test, no assessment of take-up or slip, and nothing in the manual about clutch wear, so a car with a clutch about to give up will pass without comment. The only practical connection is a car that cannot be driven under its own power onto the brake rollers, which cannot be tested at all. If you are buying a used car, this is one of the clearest examples of why an MOT certificate and a mechanical inspection are not the same document.

- What does the clutch warning light mean on a DSG or dual clutch gearbox?
- Nearly always that the clutches have got too hot. A dual-clutch gearbox has no torque converter, so it pulls away by slipping a clutch, and slipping makes heat. Crawling in traffic, manoeuvring in a car park or holding the car on a slope with the accelerator will heat the clutches faster than they can cool.
