Quick answer
The car has stopped hearing from the automatic gearbox control module. The gearbox will usually lock itself into one gear as a fail-safe, so the car still moves but drives very oddly.
How the car works this out
The gearbox module broadcasts which gear is selected, its oil temperature and its status, and it listens for engine torque and road speed in return. Other modules expect those messages at a regular rate. U0101 is stored when they stop arriving. The gearbox's own response is designed to be predictable rather than clever: with no coordination it selects a fail-safe, usually a single mid-range gear that will both move the car and let it stop, and holds it there until the fault is cleared.

How to check: Unplug the gearbox connector and look for oil inside it. Oil that has travelled up the wires from the gearbox is a well-known failure on several twin-clutch and automatic units and is unmistakable once seen.

What to do about it
- 1Stop driving it in limp mode any further than necessary. A gearbox locked in one gear puts unusual loads through the transmission and, on some units, runs the torque converter or clutches outside their normal duty.
- 2Have the gearbox connector inspected for oil. It is a distinctive and well-documented failure, and finding oil in the plug changes the diagnosis immediately.
- 3Check the code is live rather than a leftover from a flat battery.
- 4Have the fuses and supply to the module checked before anything is dismantled.
- 5Ask whether the module can be repaired or whether a replacement needs coding and adaptation to the car, because most do, and the gearbox usually needs its adaptations relearning afterwards.

The car will move, but badly. Locked in a single gear it will be slow away from rest and revving hard at speed, which is unpleasant and hard on the transmission. Pulling out into fast-moving traffic with almost no acceleration available is the real risk. Keep to quiet roads, keep the journey short, and go straight to a garage.
Will it fail an MOT?
The MOT does not road test the car and does not assess how the gearbox changes gear, so the limp mode itself is not a defect. What matters is the lamp. If the fault has illuminated the engine management lamp, that is a major defect for petrol cars first used from 1 July 2003 and diesels from 1 July 2008, with 371,859 recorded failures. There is also a practical point: the emissions test requires the engine to be held at a steady fast idle, and the brake test requires the car to be driven onto and held on the rollers, both of which a car stuck in one gear can make awkward.

- Why is my automatic gearbox stuck in third gear?
- Because that is the designed fail-safe. When the gearbox module loses communication or detects a fault it cannot work around, it stops trying to shift and holds a single mid-range gear, usually third. That gear is chosen because it is high enough to move the car at a reasonable speed and low enough to pull away from rest without slipping the clutches or converter excessively. It is the transmission protecting itself and giving you enough drive to reach help, not a mechanical failure of the gears themselves.
- Can gearbox oil damage the wiring?
- Yes, and it is one of the more elegant failure modes in modern cars. Where the wiring loom passes into the gearbox through a sealed plug, a failed seal lets oil into the connector, and from there it travels along the inside of the wire insulation by capillary action — sometimes for a considerable distance. It reaches the control module or another connector and causes exactly this kind of communication fault. The tell-tale is oil visible in a plug that should be dry, and simply replacing the module without fixing the seal and the contaminated loom repeats the failure.
- Will U0101 fail an MOT?
- Only through the lamp and through practicalities. The MOT does not road test the car and does not check how the gearbox shifts, so limp mode is not itself a defect. But if the fault has lit the engine management lamp, that is a major defect with 371,859 recorded failures behind it. There is also the question of whether the test can be carried out: holding the engine at a steady fast idle for the emissions reading and manoeuvring onto the brake rollers are both harder in a car locked in one gear.
- Is it safe to drive an automatic in limp mode?
- For a short distance to a garage, on quiet roads. The car moves and stops normally, so nothing is going to fail suddenly. The risks are that acceleration is very poor, which makes joining fast traffic hazardous, and that running permanently in one gear puts sustained load through parts that were meant to share it. It is a get-there-and-stop situation rather than something to drive around on for a week.
