Quick answer

A pump that only runs for the first minute after a cold start blows fresh air into the exhaust to help the catalytic converter heat up quickly. The control unit cannot detect it working. How the car works this out

For roughly the first thirty to ninety seconds after a cold start, an electric pump forces fresh air into the exhaust manifolds through a one-way combination valve. The extra oxygen lets unburnt fuel continue burning in the exhaust, which brings the catalytic converter up to working temperature far faster and cuts the hydrocarbons produced in that first cold minute. The control unit verifies it is happening by watching the oxygen sensor ahead of the converter swing sharply lean while the pump runs, or by reading a dedicated pressure sensor in the air line. If the expected change does not appear, or appears far too weakly, incorrect flow is recorded.

What to do about it

  1. 1Do the listening test before anything is bought. Start the car properly cold and stand by the engine bay: if there is no loud whirring for the first minute, the pump or its supply is the place to start.
  2. 2Check the fuse and relay next, because a dead circuit and a dead pump present identically and one of them costs almost nothing.
  3. 3Have the combination valve and the air passages inspected before a pump is fitted. Fitting a new pump to blocked passages is one of the classic wasted repairs on this system.
  4. 4Expect the code to need a genuinely cold start to reset. The check only runs once per cold start, so a car that has been sitting in a warm workshop will not retest itself.
  5. 5Book the repair before the MOT. There is no argument to be made at the test that the fault does not affect the emissions readings, even though it does not.

This is among the most benign faults that will illuminate an engine management lamp. The system does nothing once the engine is warm, so the car drives, performs and consumes fuel exactly as it always did. What is genuinely affected is the emissions produced in the first minute of a cold start, which is a real environmental cost but not a mechanical or safety one.

Will it fail an MOT?

This code is a particularly clear illustration of why the lamp rule matters more than the gas readings. The secondary air system only operates in the first minute after a cold start, and the MOT emissions test is carried out with the engine at full operating temperature, so the tailpipe readings are entirely unaffected by this fault — a car with a completely dead air pump will produce a gas printout indistinguishable from a healthy one. It still fails, because the illuminated lamp is a major defect on petrol cars first used on or after 1 July 2003, and the tester has no discretion on that. Owners find this one hard to accept, and it is worth being straight about it: the car is not polluting more at the moment it is measured, and it fails anyway.

Why does my car make a loud noise for a minute after starting?
That is the secondary air pump doing its job, and it is completely normal. It is an electric pump moving a lot of air, so it whirrs or buzzes loudly enough that people often mistake it for a fault, and it stops after thirty to ninety seconds. It only runs on a cold start, which is why you hear it in the morning and not when you restart after a short stop. If it has always done it and has now gone quiet, that silence is the thing worth investigating.
