Quick answer
The throttle position sensor is producing a signal in the right range, but one that does not agree with what the engine or the second sensor says the throttle is doing. On electronic throttles this is a safety-critical disagreement and the car will usually restrict power.
How the car works this out
On an electronic throttle there are always two position signals, from the pedal and from the throttle body, deliberately arranged so their voltages move in opposite directions or across different ranges. The control unit compares them continuously, and also compares throttle angle against airflow, manifold pressure and engine speed. P0121 is set when sensor A's signal is electrically valid but does not track properly: a dead spot as the throttle sweeps past a particular angle, a lag, a jump, or a persistent disagreement with its partner. Because a throttle that does not report its own position honestly is a genuine hazard, most cars respond by limiting the throttle rather than trusting it.

How to check: Sweep the throttle very slowly while watching the live percentage. A smooth sweep with a momentary drop-out or spike at one point is a worn track.

What to do about it
- 1Take this one seriously rather than driving on it. An unexpected drop into limp mode partway through an overtake or pulling onto a roundabout is the practical risk, and it happens without warning.
- 2Have the throttle body inspected and cleaned, then have the adaptation relearned with a scan tool. Cleaning without relearning frequently makes the symptoms worse rather than better.
- 3Ask for the live throttle and pedal traces to be recorded through a slow sweep. A dead spot shows up instantly on a graph and is easy to miss on a numeric display.
- 4Check the connector and the loom before replacing the throttle body, which is one of the dearer parts in the air intake.
- 5Have the battery and charging system checked if the fault is intermittent and appears on cold mornings.
Can you keep driving?
Only to a garage
This is one of the few sensor codes with a real safety dimension. The car can cut to limp mode with no warning, leaving you with very little power in the middle of a manoeuvre, and a sticking throttle can hang the revs when you lift off. Get it to a garage rather than living with it, and avoid motorways and fast dual carriageways until it is fixed.
Will it fail an MOT?
The engine management lamp is a major defect with 371,859 recorded failures behind it, so the test ends in a failure on the lamp alone. P0121 has a specific practical consequence on test day: the emissions check requires the tester to hold the engine at a steady fast idle, and a car in throttle limp mode may refuse to raise the revs at all. In that case the emissions test cannot be completed, which is itself a major failure separate from the lamp.

- Why does my car go into limp mode with P0121?
- Because a throttle that misreports its own position is a safety risk, and the designers assume the worst. On an electronic throttle the control unit has two independent position signals precisely so it can catch one of them lying. When they disagree, or when one fails to track sensibly, the unit stops trusting the throttle and holds it close to idle. That is the limp mode you feel, and it is deliberate protection rather than a secondary fault.
- Can cleaning the throttle body fix P0121?
- Often, but only if the adaptation is relearned afterwards. Carbon around the throttle plate changes the relationship between the commanded position and the actual airflow, and cleaning it away changes that relationship again. The control unit has learned the dirty position as its idle reference, so unless a scan tool runs the throttle adaptation procedure after cleaning, the idle can end up worse than before and the code can return.
- Will P0121 fail an MOT?
