Quick answer

One of the solenoid valves inside the ABS hydraulic unit, the inlet valve for the front left brake circuit, is not behaving as commanded. Braking is unaffected in normal use but the anti-lock system cannot modulate that corner, so it shuts down.

How the car works this out

Inside the hydraulic modulator each wheel circuit has an inlet valve, which holds pressure, and an outlet valve, which releases it. During an anti-lock stop the module cycles these many times a second. It checks them by energising each valve and measuring the current through its coil, which tells it whether the coil is open, shorted or drawing normally, and by watching whether pressure responds during a test cycle. C0300 is set when the front left inlet valve fails one of those checks. It is a mechanical and electrical fault inside a sealed hydraulic assembly, which is what makes it more awkward than a sensor code.

What to do about it

  1. 1Have the brake fluid changed if it is more than a couple of years old, and have its moisture content measured first. Old fluid is the most common underlying cause of sticking valves and by far the cheapest thing to address.
  2. 2Ask for the valve to be tested with a scan tool, which can energise individual solenoids and report the current each one draws.
  3. 3Ask about module repair or a refurbished exchange modulator before agreeing to a new one, and factor in that a new unit almost always needs coding to the car.
  4. 4Have the whole hydraulic system inspected if contamination is suspected. Debris in the fluid comes from somewhere, and fitting a clean modulator into a dirty system repeats the failure.
  5. 5Have the brakes bled properly with a scan tool afterwards. Bleeding an ABS modulator usually requires the valves to be cycled electronically, and a conventional bleed can leave air trapped inside.

Briefly, gently

The car brakes normally, because the valves rest in the position that passes pressure through. The anti-lock function on that corner cannot work, so the module disables the system entirely. There is one thing to watch that does not apply to the sensor codes: if the pedal has become long or spongy, or fluid is being lost, stop driving and have it looked at immediately, because that is a hydraulic problem rather than an electronic one.

Will it fail an MOT?

This code has an unusually direct connection to the rest of the brake inspection: the tester checks the brake fluid level and condition, and low fluid is its own defect, while the roller brake test measures the effort at each wheel and the imbalance across each axle. A sticking valve does not normally skew those figures, but the ageing fluid that so often causes it is exactly what the fluid check is looking for.

Can old brake fluid cause ABS faults?
Yes, and it is one of the most under-appreciated causes of expensive ABS repairs. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, and that moisture corrodes the inside of the hydraulic unit and carries debris into valves that work to very fine tolerances. Most manufacturers specify a fluid change every two years, and it is one of the most commonly skipped services because nothing appears to be wrong until a modulator sticks. Having the fluid's moisture content measured costs very little and is worth doing.
Does C0300 mean I need a new ABS pump?
Not always, and there are cheaper routes worth exploring first. The valve is inside the hydraulic modulator, so it cannot be replaced individually, but the fault may be in the electronic driver rather than the valve itself, and module specialists repair those. Refurbished exchange units are another option. If a new modulator is fitted, expect it to need coding to the car and expect the brakes to need bleeding with a diagnostic tool that can cycle the valves, which a conventional bleed cannot do.

Why do my brakes need bleeding with a diagnostic tool?
Because air can become trapped inside the ABS modulator, in passages that the normal flow of fluid does not reach. During an ordinary pedal-and-bleed-nipple bleed, the modulator's valves sit in their resting position and those passages stay sealed. A diagnostic tool can command the valves to cycle and the pump to run, pushing fluid through the whole unit and flushing the air out. Skipping this after work on the modulator leaves a soft pedal that no amount of conventional bleeding will cure.
