Why it is amber

A system has reported a malfunction, or something needs attention. The car is usually still driveable, but the fault will not clear itself and several amber lamps are an automatic MOT failure.

What turns it on

Cars with high intensity discharge or LED dipped beam headlamps are required to have self-levelling, because those beams are bright enough to be genuinely dangerous if they point too high. Ride height sensors on the suspension feed a module that drives small motors inside each headlamp. A failed sensor, a snapped sensor linkage, a seized motor or a break in the wiring sets the warning. Adaptive systems that steer the beam into corners use the same lamp.

What to do about it

  1. Park square on to a wall at night and look at the cut-off line on both sides. A beam that is obviously high, obviously low, or uneven between the two sides tells you the levelling has stuck somewhere.
  2. If your car has a manual levelling dial on the dashboard, check it has not been left on a high-numbered setting. That is not the same system, but it produces the same complaint of headlamps that light nothing.
  3. Have the codes read rather than guessing. The usual culprit is a ride height sensor or its plastic linkage, which sits in the suspension and leads a hard life, and it is a far smaller job than a headlamp unit.
  4. Book it in before the MOT rather than after. An inoperative levelling device is a major defect in its own right, and a beam that has drifted out of limits will also fail on aim.
  5. Do not simply unplug or disable the system to clear the lamp. On a car with HID or LED dipped beam the levelling is a type-approval requirement, and disabling it fails the test.

Can you keep driving?

Yes

The car is safe to drive and the headlamps still light. The risk is to other people: a stuck-high beam on a modern HID or LED headlamp is severely dazzling, and you will not be able to tell from the driver's seat. If you are getting flashed at night, treat that as the evidence and get it looked at promptly.

What causes it

  • A failed ride height sensor, or a broken plastic link between the sensor and the suspension arm
  • A seized or stripped levelling motor inside the headlamp unit
  • Corroded wiring or a water-damaged connector at the sensor, which sits low and exposed
  • A headlamp unit replaced without the levelling motor being correctly connected or coded
  • A fault in the suspension self-levelling system on air-sprung cars, which feeds the same ride height data
  • A control module fault, which is the least common outcome

Does it fail an MOT?

Not on its own — but what causes it often does.

There is no MOT defect for this warning lamp, but the system behind it is directly tested and the failures are major ones. Under section 4.1.5 a headlamp levelling device that is inoperative is a major defect, and so is a manual levelling device that cannot be operated from the driver's seat. Where a car has HID or LED dipped beam headlamps and has been fitted with a suspension or headlamp self-levelling system, the manual states that system must work, although the tester gives the benefit of the doubt where it is not possible to tell. On top of that, headlamp aim under section 4.1.2 is one of the most common failures in the whole test, and a levelling fault is one of the things that puts a beam outside the limits.

What does the headlight levelling warning light mean?
It means the system that adjusts your headlamp beam height for the load in the car has detected a fault and stopped working properly. Cars with HID or LED dipped beam headlamps must have automatic levelling, because a beam that bright pointed even slightly too high dazzles badly. The headlamps themselves still light; what you have lost is the correction. The most common cause is a ride height sensor or the plastic link that connects it to the suspension, not the headlamp unit itself.
Will a headlight levelling fault fail an MOT?
Yes. Under section 4.1.5 of the inspection manual an inoperative headlamp levelling device is a major defect, which is a straight fail, and a manual levelling device that cannot be operated from the driver's seat is also a major defect. Where a car with HID or LED dipped beam is fitted with a self-levelling system, that system must work. On top of that, if the fault has left the beam pointing outside the permitted limits the car will also fail on headlamp aim under 4.1.2, which is one of the most common failures there is.
What should I set the headlight levelling dial to?
Position 0 for normal use, meaning the driver alone or the driver plus a front passenger with an empty boot. Increase the setting as you add weight to the back of the car: rear passengers, a full boot, or a towed load all lift the nose and raise the beam. The higher numbers lower the beam, which is the opposite of what many people assume. Leaving the dial wound up on 3 when the car is empty is a very common reason for headlamps that seem to light almost nothing, and it is not a fault at all.
How do I know if my headlights are dazzling other drivers?
You largely cannot from the driver's seat, which is the problem. The two practical checks are being flashed by oncoming traffic more than usual, and parking square on to a garage door or wall at night and looking at where the horizontal cut-off falls on each side. It should be level, matched between the two lamps, and clearly below the height of the headlamps themselves at a few metres. Anything that has changed recently — a levelling fault, sagging rear springs, a heavy load left in the boot, or a newly fitted headlamp unit — can push it out.
