Why it is amber
A system has reported a malfunction, or something needs attention. The car is usually still driveable, but the fault will not clear itself and several amber lamps are an automatic MOT failure.
What turns it on
A thin wire loop is moulded into the pad at the depth the manufacturer considers worn out. When the pad wears down that far, the disc grinds through the loop and breaks the circuit, and the car lights the lamp. Cars without an electrical sensor use a metal tab instead, which squeals against the disc rather than lighting anything.
What to do about it
- Book the pads in. This is a planned job, not an emergency, but the window is short — the sensor is set to trigger with only a few millimetres of material left.
- Have the discs measured at the same time. Pads and discs wear together, and a disc that has gone below its minimum thickness is a dangerous defect at MOT time even with brand new pads on it.
- Listen for a change. A grinding or scraping noise under braking means the material has gone entirely and metal is running on metal, which ruins the disc and turns a pad change into a pad and disc change.
- Expect the lamp to stay on until the sensor is replaced. The wire loop is destroyed by wearing through, so a new pad set with new sensors is what clears it — a garage that fits pads and leaves the old sensor will leave the lamp lit.
- If the lamp came on suddenly at low mileage, have the calliper checked. A sticking calliper wears one pad far faster than the other three and will do it again to the new set.
Can you keep driving?

For now, and for a modest distance. The lamp is designed to give you time to book the car in rather than to stop you, and braking performance at this point is still normal. What changes the answer is noise: once you can hear grinding, the friction material has gone and the backing plate is cutting into the disc, at which point braking performance genuinely drops and the repair grows.

- A partially seized handbrake mechanism holding a rear pad against the disc
- A wear sensor damaged during a previous pad change, or a connector left unplugged

Does it fail an MOT?
Not on its own — but what causes it often does.
The MOT inspection manual says plainly that an illuminated brake wear indicator is not a reason for failure. The pads themselves are a different matter: worn down to the wear indicator is a major defect, worn below 1.5mm is graded dangerous, and pads contaminated with oil or grease are a major. Pads worn below 1.5mm are one of the largest single failure items on the whole test. The tester also measures the discs and assesses overall braking efficiency on the rollers, so worn pads often show up as a poor efficiency figure as well.

- Does a brake pad wear light fail an MOT?
- No — and the inspection manual states it explicitly: an illuminated brake wear indicator is not a reason for failure. The pads behind it are what get tested. A pad worn down to its wear indicator is a major defect, a pad worn below 1.5mm is graded dangerous, and pads worn below 1.5mm are among the most common failure items recorded anywhere on the test. So the lamp will not fail you, but by the time it lights, the pads very often will.
- How long can I drive with the brake pad warning light on?
- Hundreds of miles rather than thousands. The sensor is positioned to trigger with a few millimetres of friction material left, which is deliberately enough to let you book the car in rather than have it recovered. Braking is normal until the material runs out completely. The point at which that changes is audible: a grinding or scraping noise means metal on metal, and from there you are damaging the discs on every stop.
- Why is my brake pad light still on after new pads?
- Almost always because the wear sensor was not replaced. The sensor works by being destroyed — the disc wears through a wire loop and breaks the circuit — so it is a consumable that comes with a new pad set and has to be fitted with it. A garage that reused the old, already worn-through sensor, or left the connector unplugged behind the hub, will leave the lamp lit. It is a quick fix, but it does need the wheel off again.
- Do all four wheels have a brake pad sensor?
- Usually not. Most cars have one sensor on one front wheel, and some add a second on a rear. That means the lamp tells you a specific pad has worn through, not that all of them have — and it also means pads on the unsensored corners can wear out without lighting anything. This is why the pads should all be inspected when the lamp appears, rather than only the one that triggered it.
