Why it is red
Reserved for hazards and for faults where continuing could injure somebody or destroy something expensive. Most red lamps mean stop, though a few mean the opposite, so read the lamp rather than the colour.
What turns it on
A float in the master cylinder reservoir sits on the surface of the fluid and closes a switch when the level falls past minimum. On most cars this shares its bulb with the handbrake and the general brake system warning, so the same red symbol covers all three.
What to do about it
- Stop somewhere safe and try the pedal. A firm, high pedal means you probably still have a working system; a pedal that travels further than usual or sinks under steady pressure means the car should be recovered rather than driven.
- Check the reservoir under the bonnet against its MIN and MAX marks. Keep the cap on while you look — the fluid is hygroscopic and pulls moisture out of the air the moment it is opened.
- Look for the leak before you top up. Check behind each wheel, along the brake pipes under the car, and on the bulkhead where the master cylinder meets the servo. Brake fluid is thin and clear to light brown, and it lifts paint.
- Look at the pads through the wheel spokes. If they are nearly worn out, that alone explains a slow drop in level, because the pistons sit further out to compensate.
- If you do top up, use the fluid specification printed on the reservoir cap, usually DOT 4 or a manufacturer variant. Never use DOT 5 silicone fluid in a system designed for glycol-based fluid.
- A reservoir that empties again within days is a leak, not a top-up job, and the car should not be driven until it is found.
Can you keep driving?
No
Not until you have found out where the fluid went. If the pads are simply worn, the system is intact and the car will get to a garage safely — but you cannot tell that apart from a slow leak by looking at the dashboard. A hydraulic circuit that is losing fluid can go from a slightly longer pedal to a pedal on the floor in the space of one hard stop, and the handbrake is all you have left at that point.
What causes it
- Worn brake pads, which draw fluid out of the reservoir into the callipers as the pistons extend
- A corroded brake pipe weeping or split, most often over the rear axle or where a pipe passes through a clip
- A perished flexible hose at a wheel
- A leaking calliper piston seal, which shows as fluid on the inside of the wheel
- A master cylinder leaking internally past its seals, or externally into the servo
- A failed float switch reporting low level with the reservoir full
Does it fail an MOT?
Not on its own — but what causes it often does.
The lamp is a listed item but only a minor defect, so on its own it is recorded and the car still passes. The fluid level behind it is what matters: below the minimum mark is a minor defect, significantly below is a major, and fluid that cannot be seen at all is dangerous. Clearly contaminated fluid is a major defect in its own right. Testers only assess the level where the reservoir is translucent or has an indicator, and they will not remove the cap, so a dirty or opaque reservoir can hide a problem that never reaches the certificate.

- Can I drive with the brake fluid light on?
- No, not until you know why the level has dropped. Brake fluid does not burn off or evaporate. Either the pads have worn and the fluid has moved into the callipers, which is not dangerous in itself, or it is leaking out, which is. You cannot tell those apart from the driving seat. Stop, check the reservoir and look for wet patches behind the wheels and along the pipes underneath before deciding whether to drive on.
- Why is my brake fluid low?
- The innocent explanation is worn brake pads. As the friction material wears away the calliper pistons sit further out to keep contact with the disc, and the fluid that fills the space behind them comes from the reservoir — so the level falls gradually as the pads wear, and comes back up when new pads are fitted. The other explanation is a leak: a corroded pipe, a perished hose, a calliper seal or the master cylinder. A level that drops noticeably over days rather than months is a leak.
- Does low brake fluid fail an MOT?
- It depends how low. Fluid below the minimum mark is a minor defect, so the car passes with it recorded. Fluid significantly below the minimum is a major defect and fails. Fluid that is not visible at all is graded dangerous. Contaminated fluid is a major defect where the tester can clearly see it. The warning lamp being lit is itself only a minor. Note that testers do not remove reservoir caps, so they only assess level on translucent reservoirs or where there is an indicator.
- Can I just top up the brake fluid myself?
- You can, and it is straightforward — but topping up treats the symptom. Use the specification printed on the reservoir cap, usually a DOT 4 grade, from a sealed container rather than one that has been open in the garage for a year, because brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air and moisture is what lowers its boiling point. Never put DOT 5 silicone fluid into a glycol-based system. If the level falls again, stop topping up and find the leak.
- How often should brake fluid be changed?
- Most manufacturers specify every two years regardless of mileage, because the fluid absorbs water from the atmosphere over time whether the car is used or not. Water-contaminated fluid boils at a much lower temperature, and boiling fluid produces vapour that compresses, which is what gives you a long pedal on a steep descent. It is not an MOT item unless the contamination is clearly visible, so it is easily forgotten.
