Reading a UK registration
Since September 2001, UK plates follow a fixed pattern of two letters, two numbers and three letters — for example GX15 LNE.
- The first two letters are the memory tag, identifying the DVLA office region where the vehicle was first registered.
- The two digits are the age identifier. March to August uses the year itself, so 15 means March 2015. September to February adds 50, so 65 means September 2015.
- The last three letters are random, chosen to make the combination unique.
Age identifiers are a useful sanity check but not proof. A private plate can be transferred onto any vehicle and will disguise its true age completely, which is why the first registration date in the record matters more than the plate itself.
What a plate cannot tell you
You cannot identify a person from a registration number. Keeper details sit with DVLA and are released only where there is reasonable cause — the police, insurers, or a parking operator pursuing a genuine claim. There is no public service, paid or free, that returns an owner’s name from a plate, and anything advertising otherwise is not legitimate.
Outstanding finance, write-off category and stolen markers are also outside this data. Those come from a paid provenance check and are worth buying before any significant purchase.
Using a plate check before you view a car
The most valuable time to run a plate is before you travel to see something. Two minutes tells you whether the specification matches the advert, whether the MOT is current, and whether the test history shows the kind of pattern that would make the trip pointless.

- Why does my number plate return no results?
- Most often the characters have been misread — 0 and O, or 1 and I, are easy to confuse. It can also mean the vehicle is under three years old and has never been tested, has been exported or scrapped, or is registered outside Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
- Do I need to enter the space in the number plate?
- No. Spaces, hyphens and lower case all work fine. The lookup strips everything except letters and numbers before searching, so GX15 LNE, gx15lne and GX15-LNE are treated identically.
