What you might notice

Advisory or failure?
A steering wheel that is insecure, or moves relative to the column in a way that indicates looseness, is a major defect and a failure, as is a missing or defective device for retaining the wheel on its hub. A column that is insecure on its mountings, or a column coupling, universal joint or flexible coupling that is damaged, fractured or excessively worn, is also a major defect. An adjustment mechanism that will not lock in position is a major defect too, since the wheel can move while you are driving. The grading rises to dangerous where a component is likely to separate, where the retaining device is missing altogether, or where the looseness is severe enough that steering control could be lost. Where the wording describes excessive free play measured at the wheel rim rather than an insecure fixing, that is assessed as steering play instead, against the rack-and-pinion limit of about 13mm at the rim.

The airbag is what settles this. Removing a steering wheel means dealing with a pyrotechnic device and its connector, and the safe procedure — disconnect the battery, wait for the specified period for the system capacitors to discharge, handle the module face away from you — is not something to improvise from a forum post. Get it wrong and you either deploy it, which is genuinely injurious at close range, or leave a stored fault and a warning lamp that is a failure of its own. Column couplings and pinch bolts sit in a cramped footwell, must go back to a specified torque with the wheels straight, and on many cars the steering angle sensor needs recalibrating with a diagnostic tool afterwards. Leave this one alone.
What it costs
At the bottom of the band, retorquing a column mounting or fitting a new steering wheel retaining nut is under an hour of labour with a nominal part, so £90 to £150. A column universal joint or flexible coupling is £30 to £90 in parts with one to two hours in an awkward footwell, landing at £180 to £320. The top is a complete column assembly on a car where the joint is not separately available, £250 to £450 fitted, with more again where the column houses electric assistance or a squib and steering angle sensor that must be coded and recalibrated. Any job that disturbs the airbag adds diagnostic time to clear and verify the system afterwards.
What happens if you ignore it
Every other steering defect affects how accurately the front wheels follow your input. This one puts the connection itself in doubt, and there is no version of losing that at speed which ends well. A worn splined hub or a failing coupling also degrades quickly, because each movement wears the surfaces that were meant to grip. In the meantime an unlocked adjustment mechanism can drop the wheel into your lap mid-corner, and a column damaged in a previous impact may no longer collapse as designed in the next one — a safety feature quietly missing when it is needed. Where the defect is graded dangerous, the car should not be driven at all until it is repaired.
