What counts as high mileage for a used car?

It depends entirely on age. The national average is around 7,000 to 8,000 miles a year, so a six-year-old car at 45,000 is ordinary and a three-year-old at 45,000 is high. Rather than apply a rule of thumb, this tool compares the figure with the recorded mileage of every car of the same model and age that took an MOT last year, which is the actual distribution rather than an estimate.

Is high mileage bad?

Less than people think, and it depends on the kind of miles. Motorway miles are gentle; stop-start urban miles are hard on clutches, brakes and suspension. A high-mileage car with a full service history and a clean MOT record is usually a better buy than a low-mileage one that has sat unused. Where does the mileage data come from?

The odometer reading recorded by the tester at every MOT, in the DVSA anonymised MOT testing dataset. Readings are as recorded and not independently verified; the individual car's MOT history will show whether its own readings have been consistent, which is the check for clocking.

Why are the mileage bands 30,000 miles wide?

Because that is the resolution the aggregate data has, and offering a finer percentile would be invention. Within a band the tool interpolates linearly, which is the honest approximation. For a precise picture of one car, its own MOT history lists every recorded reading.
